Question Direct3D 9 test fail and games wont work

hi all, and thanks in advance for any help you may be able to offer.
ok heres the problem:

one day out of the blue, I cant play WoW!, so after messing around with the wow files a wile i realise it's not the game its the video card with issues, i have no other games to test the card (so to speak), so i used dxdiag ( i am running 9.0c) there are no issues in notes and all direct draw tests seem fine. However the Direct 3D test fails, (well the first one works, then direct3d 8 and 9 fail), with the 3d box poorly rendered then not spinning at all).

Relevent System Specs as follows (Dell optiplex gx240) :
Intel Pentium 4 1.8Ghz
1024mb ram
ATI Radeon 9250 (agp)
Windows XP
DirectX9.0c

The only things i have done between wow working and not is install and run registry mechanic and also driver genius, however after incountering the problem i have done the following:

RE-INSTALL WOW
(obviously before i realized card was at fault)

ROLL BACK DRIVERS
to the older drivers that worked (well the graphics card ones did anyway), I have rolled back the MoBo chipset, AGP inerface and Graphics card drivers to ones i knew worked 100 percent.

UPDATE DRIVER
(graphics card only, . . then mobo etc) manually not with driver genius this time!.

FORMAT C:
(yes i decided it had the best of me and I did the worst), re installed XP professional.
Xp recognized the card and installed it as a 9200 family, yet test results in dxdiag were same, also for some reason DX9.0c was allready installed at this point (maybe an xp sp2 thing????)

The problem persists, . . . .

UN-INSTALLED DIRECT X 9.0C
(well i attempted too, i just deleted the folder in the registry, localmachine\software\microsoft\directx, yeh this is probibly a poo way of uninstalling it but i don't know of a better way, maybe you do??? , I thought a fressh install on 8.1 may be a quick fix but im quite sure i ran 9.0c before without issues.

I never usually stump myself but this is absolutely giving me the SH. .... well u know. . . I'm getting frustrated, . . . now is this as simple as my graphics card has kicked the bucket??, do they die in this way??/, i am still able to view windows etc in high resolution etc, I don't know, any thoughts and help would be greatly appreciated

I look forward to hearing back from anyone.

thanks

Re: Direct3D 9 test fail and games wont work

Hi, and thanks for the response.

Yep ive done that, no dice, i have now un-installed all drivers again so its just an unrecognized vga device in Manager and i will download and install ATI catalyst 5.6 as aposed to the normal 'barbone' type drivers i hav been playing with.

I will let you know if this works.

Just as a side note, apparently this exact problem is a common #uff up on the newer ati cards and it has to do with later drivers from ati having problems with D3D in AGP cards only, they fix this by rolling back to about 7.6 catalyst, as it is apparently the last to support AGP versions of the cards, this shouldn't apply to me though as i am using a much older version of catalyst. Just thought it worth noting that ATI have driver problems, If your buying a new card, ... go for the Nvidia IMO

Re: Direct3D 9 test fail and games wont work

Damn
didnt help, this is horrible i have WoW withdrawl!!, i might buy a new card although at this point i believe its a driver issue not the card itself, ah well what are the Nvidia 6200 Like? is it equal to my 9250 ati card?, I have only a low profile agp slot so i think thats the best nvidia card available, all i wanna play is WoW i dont get into other PC games much.
cheers

Re: Direct3D 9 test fail and games wont work

OK, well il continue as if someone was reading this which apart from one person im not sure if they are

whilst waiting for my new Nvidia card i am now having bad problems in general with the VPU re-setting itself and dying out, writting in web browser pxelating etc. weather this has to do with the several driver changes in the last 24 hrs (CPU to AGP bridge and Graphics card drivers), i don't know. But im am now wondering if the card has just kiked the bucket. Is there anyone who can tell me if its possible for a graphics card to die in this way??, I have never had one die on me they usually outlast my other components.

Is it possible that a card is at the end of its life with this type of behavior?, one would expect they would just die DEAD, thats it. , I dont know any advice would be appreciated, do you think its worth me trying to put the card in another pc?, coz if its not dead i will use it in my linux system or sell it (and no im not experimenting with a suspect card in linux unless i know the card is good lol, to much of a headache.
ok thanks

Re: Direct3D 9 test fail and games wont work

when you tap f8 when booting you should get an options menu
safe mode
safe with networking
last known good configuration
vga mode
