New Graphics Card for Dell 8250

Hi,

From scanning through the Forum I was able to find a recommended graphics card for a Dell 8250, 1.5Gb RAM, 1Tb Hard Drive, 3.06GHz, 500W PSU on 04/05/2007.

04/05/2007: RESOLVED Dell 8250 not working with ATI X1650

I am in a similar process but already have a 500W PSU but when I followed the link for the suggested card it has been discontinued. The closest I can find is this: XFX PVT44AYAJG GeForce 6200 512MB 64-bit GDDR2 AGP 4X/8X Video Card - Retail at newegg.com.

Any thoughts if this is the best I can do with the 8250 or would you have other thoughts?

PS I'm not interested in using it as a heavy gaming PC but more as a regular daily use but the ATI Radeon card that's in it at the moment is putting the Vista Experience Index at 1.0 when everything else in the index is scoring 4+.

Any thoughts would be great.

Thanks.

Welcome to tsf.

If your current card works for everything you need , and just has a low score , then is there somthing else you need it for?

Re: New Graphics Card for Dell 8250

The card that's currently in the machine will run Vista in its most basic mode. I want to change my 17" monitor up to a 22" widescreen model which the current card doesn't have any 16:9 resolutions for so I saw this as a chance to upgrade it.

I'm also limited in that I can't view any video, YouTube, etc.. in fullscreen mode either.

While I'm not going to be using it for Flight Sims I do want to be able to see the benefit of Vista's extra graphics in day to day use. At the moment the new tools like Flip 3D and seeing running programs in the task bar don't work because of the low graphics score.

What I want to ensure is that the card I choose boosts both the 3D graphics ability and general video scores.

Thanks.

In that case you could get an agp x1650 to hold you over until you get a new machine. There realitively cheap.

Re: New Graphics Card for Dell 8250

Thanks.

I can only support AGP 4x - some of these references state AGP 8x for the same card - do you now if the card came in 8x/4x and 8x versions or would you reckon they are just bad descriptions?

Regards,

The one's that state 4x/8x are compatible. If it just says 8x and doesn't stae 4x in there somewhere , then it's just 8x.

Re: New Graphics Card for Dell 8250

Three months on and I'm finally able to update. I installed the X1650 into the 8250 unit but am getting a video controller error (lights A and C stay amber) on boot. Has anyone seen the X1650 work on a 8250 unit? I'm seeing some posts to say the two don't work together??

I'm now thinking of updating the BIOS to A04 from A01 but don't see any references to AGP improvements in the Dell change logs.

Any ideas of what else I can do???
