I just recently bought a new Nvidia 8500 GT card w/ 512 vid ram for my desktop PC. I purchased it to replace an older Nvidia 7300 GS card that I thought had burned out after a little over a year of use.
When I went to install the new card I followed the manufacturers installation instructions exactly. I uninstalled the old video drivers, removed the old card from the PCI express slot and installed the new one in it's place. When I turned the PC back on everything looked good. The new card had power to it because its cooling fan was running. I then installed the new video drivers and rebooted again. But when I connected the monitor to the card the monitor went black. I checked the display adapter settings under device manager, but the new card wasn't listed. All it showed was the onboard Nvidia 6100 card. I disabled the onboard card to see if it would then default to the 8500, but that didn't work. When I called the card's tech support all they said is that either the card was bad or the PCI slot was bad and basically he couldn't help me with that. He also said to make sure my power supply was providing enough power to the card. My suspicion is that the PCI-e slot might be bad because the PC isn't seeing either card when they are plugged in and yet the cooling fan on each card is working. Any suggestions or insight into this would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance! My PC is an eMachines T6532. Here are the specs: AMD Athlon™ 64 3500+ processor with AMD 64 Technology (2.2GHz, 2000MHz system bus, 512KB L2 cache) Operating System: Genuine Microsoft® Windows® XP Media Center Edition 2005 Chipset: NVIDIA® GeForce® 6100 Memory: 1024MB DDR (2 × 512MB), 400MHz (PC3200), dual-channel Expandable to 4GB Hard Drive: 200GB (7200rpm, 2MB cache) Onboard Video: NVIDIA® GeForce® 6100 GPU Up to 128MB of shared video memory PCI Express (PCIe x16) slot available Power supply: 300w max output |

Re: Video card/ PCI slot problems. Please help!
Are you saying it is a power supply issue? The 8500 GT card requires a 300w power supply which I have, but I wasn't sure if it was not able to pull enough power. Any suggestions on a way to find this out or is it another issue alltogether? Thanks!
