Need an AGP card
I have a dell 4600 P4 2.8ghz, 1.5gb pc3200, 250wt power supply, geforce 5200, xp pro. I want a new vid card. Whats the best AGP vid card I can get for under $200 with my specs? I know the power supply could be a problem. But I think this dell may need the MB adapter if I were to get a new PSU. I was looking at the geforce 9600gt(?) i think, around a year ago but didnt have the money until now.
Oh by the way, it'll be used for general PC use, acad/3d acad, and moderate gaming (want to be able to play halo, doom 3, etc) Last edited by arej00dazed; 01-10-2009 at 07:31 PM. |

Re: Need an AGP card
If you have 200$ I would bank it , don't blow it on agp.
And if your just playing halo 1 and doom 3 then you could just snag a cheapo geforce 7600 off ebay. It's cheap and will hold you over till you get a new machine. Plus it's nvidia so you won't have the driver problems with moving over to ati or moveing up to there second gen agp cards. And should be plenty for halo , doom3 , and 3d work. http://shop.ebay.com/items/_W0QQ_dmp...12mb&_osacat=0

Re: Need an AGP card
oh man, ebay. yeah, Im not a big ebay shopper, been burned many times. But what places besides newegg and tigerdirect should I look? AGP cards are getting hard to find, goin the way of the dodo
so you suggest a geforce 7600. as long as it doesnt stall like my current card does....kinda sux when playing online and the vid freezes for 30~ sec Last edited by arej00dazed; 01-11-2009 at 07:47 PM. |

If your current one freezes it could be that 250w powersupply. You can cheap out on the gpu since it's just agp and you will pretty much have to throw it away or closet it when you get your next machine. But you can however dump alot into a good powersupply as they barely change over the years. Maybe a quality 550 to 600 watt to future proof whatever you may get in your next rig.

Re: Need an AGP card
Im 99% sure it needs the adapter for a regular PSU to work and not fry the MB. I've looked into this, but its been awhile and the details are foggy. Besides, Im dropping enough money getting a new HD and controller card. Im surprised dell put such a small PSU in it in the first place.

Re: Need an AGP card
Yea never bother talking to the technicians.
I used to have a gateway and wanted to upgrade the cpu , talked to gateway support and they told me it wasn't possible. Then I came here and asked and found out they were just simply lieing , the upgrade was possible and I did upgrade the cpu.

Re: Need an AGP card
well shoot, how do I find out for sure? will that link you sent me tell me? I can't tell if the diagram is for the Dell F'd up version or type ATX PSU.
At least I supposedly have a SATA connection on the board, that'll solve my HD dilema. |

Re: Need an AGP card
if your colour wires going into the plug match the the same as the diagram then yours is propriatary
if it matches these it is standard atx http://www.smpspowersupply.com/connectors-pinouts.html
