Problem with Gefore6200 graphics card

Hi,

I installed a PMY Geforce 6200 PCI card yesterday so I could make full use of an HPw1907 19 inch flat screen monitor just purchased and have been having problems.

After eventually getting rid of most of the settings for the Intel 82810 graphics adapter that is built into my old PC’s motherboard I thought it was working but what seemed like a minor problem remaining is now looking like a major one.

Problem:
Occasionally, when scrolling around at first the screen was freezing for 3 to 5 seconds then flickering from black back to an active screen. I discovered when trying to enter the Nvidia control panel twice that Windows XP crashed with no error message. Once with the PC rebooting and another time stopping responding with a beeping noise coming from the PC I think, occasionally. It also froze for around 5 minutes when trying to type this thread and left the keyboard not fully working.

I thought my PC met all the required specifications, it has as follows:

RAM 256mb
Intel Pentium III processor
PCI slot available
270 watt power supply I think from label

Thanks for any advice

Re: Problem with Gefore6200 graphics card

I am working on a similar problem. (I get a BSOD.) Dai's solution to everything is to replace the PSU. In this case, he may be right as I think the recommended minimum PSU for that card is 300w. I think that will only solve part of you problem, though. There is an updated driver available from Nvidia, just released Jan. 8, that claims to solve some of these issues. For me, I don't get a BSOD anymore, it just freezes. (For those who might respond to this post, mys system is a Pentium 4, 1Gb RAM, 450w PSU.)

Re: Problem with Gefore6200 graphics card

Hi,

Thanks for your advice, the minimum power supply quoted for the Geforce 6200 is 250W.
Does anyone know if there are any of the settings such as 32bit apposed to 64bit that will reduce the required power.

Cheers

Re: Problem with Gefore6200 graphics card

if they quote a min of 250
add 60% and you will be in the ball park

Re: Problem with Gefore6200 graphics card

Hi,

After trying the latest drivers for the graphics card I decided to remove the graphics card and go back to the intel 82810 that is built into the motherboard as there were more problems.

I have a feeling that the system requirements quoted by PNY are far below the true minimum.

Per PNY

250w power supply
Intel Pentium III
128MB Ram
50MB disk space

My own PC

270w power supply
Intel Pentium III
256MB Ram
Found out when uninstalling that Nvidia drivers they were using 1,300 MB of hard disk space

Now that I am back to using an 800 x 600 resolution with the intel 82810. This leaves me with two black borders down the side of the screen. Does anyone know if there are any other graphics cards still available that would provide 960 x 600 resolutions with less fancy performance features than the Geforce 6200.

Thanks for your help
