GTX 280 Installation Issues
Hi all,
I recently bought the BFG GTX 280 and the E8400 for my GA-965P-S3 motherboard. I began installation by removing the tuniq tower 120 heatsink, took out the E6600 and put the E8400 in. I added some thermal paste to the top of the E8400 and removed the old paste from the heatsink. That was grand, I put the heatsink back on and plugged the fan and power back in. Then I took out the 8800GTS and and put the GTX 280 in. I noticed that the 280 required a 6 pin and 8 pin connector. BFG supplied adapters in the box, 2 molex to 6 pin and two 6 pin to one 8 pin. So I connected all them up from my OCZ GameXStream 600W PSU. Then it was time for the moment of truth...I closed the case,, connected the display, sound etc, pressed the power button, and all the fans turned on, but there was no beeps and no picture, after about 3 seconds it restarted and then just stayed on, but again no picture and no beeps. So I figured it was the processor, I checked gigabytes website for the MB and found out the it doesn't support the E8400. I then put the E6600 back in and the computer worked. But after about 4 minutes when I was in windows,, it froze, I tried restarting it but i'm back to square 1 - no display, no beeps. I even tried putting the 8800GTS back in and I still get no picture. Also, I took out the graphics card, the memory, so it was just the CPU on the motherboard...and still no beeps. Can anyone here give me some advice on how I can sort this out? And also what might be causing the problem? All the lights on the sound card (which is in the pci slot) are working. But one thing I did note was the GTX 280 gave a red light which indicates not enough power - even though I had the adapters connected. Any help much appreciated. Thanks! |

Re: GTX 280 Installation Issues
with the gtx280 your power needs to be at a min of a quality 850-1000w
you may have blown the 12v line putting the 280 to it Power Supply Information and Selection

Re: GTX 280 Installation Issues
Are you sure? It says it only requires a 550W on nvidia's website.
Is there anyway I can check if the PSU is blown? Thanks! Last edited by echoindia756; 01-10-2009 at 05:37 AM. |

Re: GTX 280 Installation Issues
you test with either the video or the ram removed for beeps not both
is the red light out now when you changed cpu's did you clean off and put on new paste bfg's are not a recommended unit

But I still have the problem of no display and no beeps. I'm thinking it might be the CPU or motherboard. What do you think? Thanks! |

Re: GTX 280 Installation Issues
Did you make sure that the E8400 was compatible with your Motheboard. You might be required to clear your CMOS when changing CPU, your motherboard might still be reading it as youe old CPU.

So I put the E6600 back in and the computer booted up but then crashed and it wouldn't turn back on. Basically I dont get any beeps, and no display. I have tried a new PSU but no luck. I think I should buy a new motherboard, so I can use the E8400. I'll have to get it in my local PC World I cant wait another week to get this computer working.Would you guys agree that the motherboard and/or CPU is damaged? I also noticed that when I plugged a system fan into the motherboard connector, the fan did not work, but when I plugged it into the PSU, it worked perfectly. Perhaps this is an indicator that the MB is blown. What do you think? I tried clearing the CMOS and no luck there either. Thanks! Last edited by echoindia756; 01-11-2009 at 05:29 AM. |

Re: GTX 280 Installation Issues
will the plug reach another fan socket on the m/b to check it
how did you clear the cmos cmos reset turn the computer off remove the power lead from the back take the side off remove the cmos battery move the cmos jumper from pins 1 and 2 to pin 2 and 3 and the back to pins 1 and 2 reinsert the battery put the side on replug in the power lead boot the computer there can be 2 solder points you touch with a screwdriver 2 pins you touch with a screwdriver or use a jumper a cmos clear switch or button there will be a diagram and instructions in your manual

I could try connecting the system fan to the CPU fan connector on the MB , and connect the CPU fan directly to the PSU. If this fan moves, does that indicate the MB has power? And if not, is it blown? Thanks! |

Re: GTX 280 Installation Issues
it's to check the fan and see if it turns straight away nd keeps turning
you have connected the aux power plug to the m/b

Re: GTX 280 Installation Issues
Make sure you havn't left any power cables out of the motherboard. Like the 4-pin plug close to the CPU. Your motherboard wont boot without it. Check and make sure the RAM is seated properly and that all other PCI and PCI-E devices are seated properly.
