Epic Failures
Ok, so it started with my motherboard dieing. Went out, bought a nice new Asus mother board, new AMD Phenom X3 8450 processor, and put em in. SO, next my internet wouldn't work inside XP, although it worked on Splash Screen and Linux. I decided too reformat the computer, re-install drivers which seemed to work.
Now i am faced with an entirely new problem. After Instilling the graphic drivers for my Ge Force 9800, I rebooted the computer only to come across a pink screen with black grid lines on it. This, I have no clue what to do about, or how to even go about troubleshooting. All I have is my little white mouse pointer. Nothing else changes at all. Please help!. |

Re: Epic Failures
Aha , thought so.
I was about to ask the make and model but it wouldn't reallt matter. 550watts isn't enough for a 9800. You actually need a quality 600 to 650watts with 26 amps on the 12v rail , or for a gtx 700w or higher with the same amps. The powersupply could have either worn out long ago causeing your early problems or it could have fried recently after you installed the 9800.

Re: Epic Failures
Ok a question, I have become aware that theere is power supply boosters * that simply, add power, eg if you had 550 W, added a 400W booster, you'd haave 950 wats.. Now, my question is, is there a chance the supply is not completely dead? (which i think it is and have no clue how to find out for sure, and if I simply put in a booster, would it be able to work)?
THanks. |

Re: Epic Failures
Boosters cause more problems then they solve, the current output from the booster can interfere with the ocp on the real supply and cause it to keep lowering output when in fact it can't control the output any longer because the booster is.
They are not worth the problems they create. |

Re: Epic Failures
Progress has been made!!
I had a -semi- successful boot with the 9800, 550w power supply and ,my ASUS motherboard. Only the bare minimal, but i didn't get the pink & black screen. EDIT: ok I am in the BIOS, no pink & black screen. I when I tried it with the hard drive connected to it, pink and black screen. Not quite sure what's going on now.. Feed back would be appreciated. EDIT2: I've left it running in bios for a while now, CPU Temp hovers around 47*C, M/B TEMP around 34*C Still not crashes or anything like that. Last edited by Xeathos; 01-14-2009 at 04:38 PM. |

Re: Epic Failures
SOrry cant edit one above any more.
I have successfully connected the disk drive and loaded into Puppy Linux. My next step will be to do that & attempt to delete everything off the hard drive from Puppy (if i do not receive the pink & black screen, and try to re-install everything. Edit: Ok, I tried to boot up with puppy disk in, and hard drive connected. I got the pink and black screen again. SO im wondering, are you sure it's because of the power supply? or is it a possibility that the hard drive is failing. Thanks again. Last edited by Xeathos; 01-14-2009 at 05:06 PM. |

Re: Epic Failures
It will most likely be one or the other, but I'd lean towards the hard drive. Try another cable on it. If still the same try booting to Puppy with a different hard drive connected. And then if the problem still exists with another cable and another hard drive, and booting from the Puppy disc, see if you can borrow a known working power supply from someone to test with.

Re: Epic Failures
Well, it's certainly colourful.
In another vein, how are your drives connected, sata/ide? Hard drive and cd/dvd drive.

Re: Epic Failures
Sata. But wait, im going to try something, because I remember it saying IDE in the bios, but their sata connected.
EDIT: Yes their SATA , but w.o them connected when I enter BIOS-ADVANCED-MCP Storage Config, it has the options for.. IDE RAID AHCI. I have IDE selected , and believe I always did. Not sure what the different is though. But, also I couldn't find the other HD, will check more in depth tomorrow. Last edited by Xeathos; 01-14-2009 at 08:24 PM. |

Re: Epic Failures
Ok update. I managed to get into Puppy Linux w/o HD connected, then connected it to try and delete what info on it, then perhaps re-install winXP. Couldn't delete any of the files though, even in linux -.-

Re: Epic Failures
OK FINAL UPDATE (I hope).
Now, while in a different linux distro, lot's of strees and misleading info coming back, I managed to wipe the HD. As I'm sitting here, Im watching Windows XP be re-installed.. (tho, my computer components are still scattered across the desk, in a working format ofc.) So, I soupose you could call this solved :p. Thanks for the tips & help guys, and the funny thing is, future shop wanted to charge me 40$ for a diag. test, then another 60$ to re-install windows.. AS IF :P |
