Heat issues with an ATI x1800 XT

Hi I am experiencing heating problems with my graphics card ATI X1800 XT. Had a look through the forums but couldn't find a solution. When playing 3d games or running the 3d test in ATI tool it gets up to 120C and then crashes my computer causing me to manually reboot. I thought perhaps the power supply I was using, an X-Power 500W unit could be the culprit so i've replaced it with a Corsair 750W unit which seems pretty solid, i've tied all the cables inside so they are all out of the way, airflow overall is good. I have an ANTEC case with plenty of fans in it, the CPU temperature is fine, averaging around 45-50C but when in use the graphics card just rises and rises in temperature before it crashes =( I have tried setting the fan speed to 100% in ATI Tool and while I can hear the fan (it gets quite noisy at 100%) the temperature still steadily rises while playing 3d intensive games like Farcry 2, Oblivion or as mentioned running the ATITool 3d test. I've also tried lowering the clocks in ATI tool and cutting down the graphics options in the various games but it doesn't seem to have much if any effect =(

I've looked inside and the graphics card fan appears to be running fine and there doesn't seem to be much if any dust in the fan unit. I don't know what could be causing it to spiral up so high =/ Even the idle temperature is usually around 80C. Then when I start a 3d game it slowly creeps up until 120C then crashes the PC. The graphics card is about a year and a half old, wouldn't think it would start to be problematic so soon..

Anyone have any idea what the heating problem could be and how to deal with it?

Re: Heat issues with an ATI x1800 XT

Hmm seems like i'm going to need a new graphics card. I'm looking at getting this one:

Seems pretty good for the money and shouldn't have any overheating issues with this one.

Welcome to tsf.

Since you have a proper powersupply and seemed to have done everything to cool it down it does seem to be genuienly broken. And I would imagine it would be problematic as the card isn't a year and a half old , but rather about 4 years now.
