Video Display problem.

Hi, I have a strange problem with my PC. Yesterday I was playing a game and my screen started to flicker and got full of artifacts, I got an odd beep sound from the inside of the PC (like when you hold a few keys at once), and the PC just froze.

I decided to dust everything out so I took every component out and cleaned everything. When I put it back together, it got worse.

When I load to my desktop, the PC seems very slow, and still while loading, the screen gets strange artifacts in yellow and blue colors evenly spread out on the screen, and the comp becomes frozen. I also touched the metal plate on my video card and it seems hotter than it should.

The other problem is that since the comp freezes, i cannot even check the temps and voltages.

I have no idea what to do, and was wondering if someone could help me.

Specs...
OS: WinXP64bit ProSP2
MB: ASUS Motherboard
GPU: Evga 8800 Ultra
Processor: Quad Core 9300
Ram: 4GB Gskill (2 rams with 2gb each)
PSU: Antec Truepower Quattro 850Watt

Thanks, Yuriy.

Re: Video Display problem.

Which ASUS motherboard do you have?

if you go into BIOS and check PC health stats, what do temps and volts look like?

Was the gfx card overclocked? The Ultra's are already out on the 20 foot plank from the factory.

Re: Video Display problem.

ok... since my pc is stable for now, here is what SpeedFan shows...

http://img165.imageshack.us/my.php?image=spdfanai8.jpg

the gpu i think is normal since someone once told me that is normal for 8800's to run at that temp, of course maybe he was wrong.

the cpu seems kind of hot. could that be because of the thermal compound? when i was cleaning my computer, i re-applied the thermal compound... maybe i didnt do it well enough.

i use Arctic Cooling MX-2 Thermal Compound.

Re: Video Display problem.

in order of listing:

GPU: wayyyy too hot
system: normal
CPU: wayyy too hot
aux: disconnected sensor
HD0,1: normal
cores 0,1,2,3: wayyy too hot.

BUT

ignore CPU temperatures. DTS is way wrong on the newer quads.

the ultra card will use extra power and heat...but 76 is just wayyyyyyy too high.

I'm on Q8200 and 9800GTX

T1: 44C
T2: 34C
Core 0: 48
Core 1: 44
HD0: 21
HD1: 28
Temp: 58
GPU: 58
Core 2: 48C

Re: Video Display problem.

This is what BIOS shows...

Temps:
CPU - 62°C
MB - 35°C

Voltage:
VCORE - 1.192V
3.3V - 3.248V
5V - 5.136V
12V - 11.928V

also, i have the large Full Tower Thermaltake Xaser case.

I have 2 large fans facing up towards the video card, 2 on the sides of the case both facing to the center(inside). I believe the 2 fans on the sides are placed to extract air out of the case as i can feel the cool air blowing out of the back of the case and out the front.

Re: Video Display problem.

the front and side should be drawing air in and the rear exhausting
have you redone the paste on the cpu you need to bring that temp down

ok i placed the fans and compound correctly.. in addition added a PCI Slot fan(2 fans) and 2 small fans on top of the back plate of the video card. this dropped my temps nicely...

GPU: 62°C
CPU: 58°C

sry for posting again i couldnt edit my previous post...

im running into problems again when i try a game. the loading screens and menus are fine, but when it gets to the actual game, its impossible to play.

the screen becomes black, i get some blue artifacts on the black screen, and on and off it goes from gameplay to this black artifact screen until the game freezes and i have to close it from the task manager. but my pc doesnt freeze and after i close the game my comp runs fine.

i reinstalled to the latest directx and display drivers but it is still not helping. what else may i try?

ok now im having major problems... i am not even playing a game, and my pc starts to flash unexpectadly, and flicker on and off to a black screen. then it stops and i can continue to use my pc.

it then shows at the bottom right... "display driver has stopped working and has recovered". after a few seconds my monitor just shut off as if my video card failed which i really hope it hasnt. it is completely unreliable and i dont know what to do.

could this be my motherboard (gpu slot) problem as well?

after further testing, i put in my old evga 7800GT card and it worked fine. so the problem is my video card.

i dont understand why its giving me such problems... if it didnt work, then it wouldnt even be detected which it is, i will try to take it apart and clean out the dust and see if that works.

just tried to use the vid card and when it loaded to the desktop, my screen was black with blue artifacts, i was still able to see the mouse cursor, but my monitor shut off.

i fear the worst ='((

Re: Video Display problem.

there is a problem with your cpu tempreture
check it is seated correctly and one of the holding pins has not popped up
clean off the paste and reapply

Re: Video Display problem.

just a note... can the cpu temp problem affect my 8800 ultra performance that way and make it seem like it has failed?

Re: Video Display problem.

it can effect the computers performance
we no longer recommend antec psu's and it may be the problem it is at the min wattage for the card
so if it is not working as expected it can cause the problem
to try and borrow one i that wattage range is difficult
test it with a multi meter
it could also be bad ram on the card itself
the psu could cause the heat and the graphic problems
can you check the card on another computer
these things are always a problem finding someone with a system capable of running them willing to help

Re: Video Display problem.

no one i know who can test this monsterous card out. my previous PC has a oczxtreme700watt PSU... would it be able to pull this card at least for testing purposes?

i guess at the time this is the only option i have. im currently using my old 7800GT video card which is running fine.

Re: Video Display problem.

ok last thing.. what is the difference between the power supply i posted, and the one you guys have posted in the recommended page.....

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817153072

the output voltages are the same, but some other specs like the input volts are slightly different. is the one you guys recommend better for the 8800Ultra?

thanks.
