Re: New BFG 9800GT freezes in-game

GOOD NEWS! I have Fixed this problem as when switching back to my 8600GT i realized that it used Forceware 175 driver whereas the 9800GT was using 180 so as a quick thought i installed my 9800GT with forceware 175 and the problem seams to be gone, so anyone having this problem it seams that Nvidia's Forceware 180 WHQL is broken, try using the cd that came with the card.

Re: New BFG 9800GT freezes in-game

Ah, well the driver change seems to have helped the problem but not cured it - this now happens less often, could the 180 drivers have damaged the Graphics Card?

Re: New BFG 9800GT freezes in-game

What power supply do you have? Manufacturer and model, also note the outputs (in amps) for the +3.3, +5, and +12volt rails. The 9800GT needs more power than an 8600, a 650 watt power supply is the minimum recommended.

my power suply is a OCZ Stealth EXTREME 600w,
it outputs 3.3v at 36A 5v at 30A and 4 12v rails at 18A

this is what bfg requests;
400W PCI Express®-compliant system power supply with a combined 12V current rating of 26A or more (Minimum system power requirement based on a PC configured with an Intel Core®2 Extreme X6800 processor)

Re: New BFG 9800GT freezes in-game

The 600 watt OCZ should power it. Usually a 650+ watt unit is recommended, but it should do the job. Reinstall the drivers, but don't just run them again.

Go to device manager and uninstall the display adapter (9800GT) and then reboot your machine into vga mode (tap f8 while booting to get to OS mode selection) , or safe mode if vga is not available. If windows wants to install drivers, cancel that. Disable your antivirus. Run Driver Sweeper to rid yourself of any remnants of the old drivers. Then install the drivers. I'd try the 178.24's, they seem good. After the driver install, reboot into normal mode, turn your antivirus back on and then see how it is.

edit - oops, forgot link to driver sweeper. http://www.guru3d.com/category/driversweeper/
