Pullin my hair out Compaq sr1055cl AGP no boot problems... detailed story inside

OK this is my last ditch effort

like in title my friend has a Compaq SR1055CL

The intergrated graphics card just isnt doin it for WoW and she needs a Graphics card...

IVE TRIED SEVERAL

ok sooo first i tried A PCI card.. this one to be exact
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1203815034315

and installed the drivers and did everything by the book to a T and it was all workin perfect.... THEN i tried to open WoW now mind you this is on the stock power supply... upon opening WoW the computer crashes and restarts on boot prompting that it had recovered from a fatal error. at this point i think its a faulty card so i open back up the PC to remove it and take it back to the store and notice there is an AGP slot (ill get back to that in a second) so i get to the store (best buy) and return it.. i look on the internet there to get sum info on the voltage/version/slot config and so forth for the motherboard AGP slot... here is where i got the info

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/d...product=404613

More specifically here
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/d...#c00063254_doc

and upon reading that exchange the PCI card for this
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1203815723741
same thing but with more ram and in AGP version.... now i go home excited and plug it in with the additional power from the box and so forth annnnddd... nothin turn on the comp with no boot just fans running continuosly... now at this point im like DAM so i take it to ALTEX and ask if they know whats up they say it could be my power source.... so i bumped it up to a LS400W..... annndd upon power up still nothin same symptoms no boot just continual runnin of fans... we were at a loss because to my knowledge it was a 1.5v board and it says that slot is a 4x/8x so i figured id be good... nope... so i keep the power supply and tellum thx for tryin.. clingin to the hopes that the card is faulty i take it back to best buy and get my money back....

i then should have done what im doin now lol but i went to new egg and bought this
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814161257

upon installation same thing continual fans but no boot

please help OMG dood i just want here to have more than 10 FPS on the lowest possible resolution LOL

sumone please tell me what to do

ask away with any specifics needed

thanks all

First thing that you want to try is clearing the CMOS. I don't know if it's just my eyes, but I can't see a coin cell battery on the motherboard. Anyway, unplug the computer first of all. Look down in the bottom right corner of the motherboard next to the buzzer, there looks to be 3 pins with a jumper on two of them. It is marked CLRTC. Move the jumper from pins 1&2 to pins 2&3. Now look for a coin cell battery, if one is there, remove it. Wait a few minutes, longer if there wasn't a battery. Replace battery (if applicable) move the jumper back to it's original position, plug the computer back and and try and start it up. You will know if it has been cleared if you have to reset the time in the bios, if you get a display. If not there are more things that you can try.

Do you know anyone with an nVidia AGP card you can try? There are a lot of problems with ATI graphics and the Via chipset. If that isn't easily done, then give the ati card a bit more of a try.
Go into the bios, after first reconnecting to the onboard video, and see if there is something to disable the onboard, or set display priority to agp.

If there is nothing to disable in the bios, try uninstalling the onboard drivers before installing the card. Go to device manager and expand display adapters. Right click on the onboard that's listed there and select uninstall. This will uninstall the drivers and you will get your video with the basic xp drivers.
Shut down the computer, install the video card, connect to it, and go into VGA mode, and if that isn't available try safe mode. This way xp won't try and auto install drivers and will use the generic ones. To get the boot options, usually one would tap f8 before windows starts loading, using the same timing as you would to go into the bios. It may not be f8, but I think it is for oem computers. For the bios it could be one of several keys, probably f2. It should be in the user's manual that came with the computer. Could also be the delete key like it is with component type motherboards, or even f1.
Anyway, once you get to that boot menu and go into vga (preferrably) or safe mode, disable any antivirus or antispyware and then install the drivers for the video card from the disc that came with it. Then reboot into normal mode and start your antivrus and antispyware first thing. Of course, all this is assuming you do get video after disabling in bios and/or uninstalling the onboard.

Hope I didn't miss anything and it isn't too disjointed, at work and doing a bit inbetween that pesky work stuff when I can.

i believ there is a coin cell on the mother board.. it looks like a watch battery in a slot.. im new to all this soo... and i dont know what a buzzer is er looks like but unfortunanly i dont have the comp in question in front of me but im sure ile find it.

in bios it either gives me the option to set PCI as priority or AGP/Onboard i have it set to AGP Onboard

Ok i will try this i have only been disabling it not uninstalling it or does it matter?

and to the rest of your reply ill keep my fingers crossed and try again :-(

thx so much and ill let you know what happens.

another question tho... why wont it boot when i put the card in? like the fans will run continuaslly but no boot

That is the question for sure. It's outputting video to the onboard, even with the agp card installed. Cmos holds the user defined bios settings and clearing it sets back to default and reacquires the hardware. When you clear it, boot up with the agp card installed and the cable hooked up to it. If you get video it will give you an option such as, "press f1 to enter setup" or "press f2 to enter setup defaults and continue", select the first one and go into the bios as you need to reset the time - if the time and date do not have to be reset, the cmos was not successfully cleared. After that you would look for something along the line of loading defaults and then save and exit. Don't ask me why, but there are times when just going into the bios and saving and exiting without any changes will fix something like an error message etc. Once the new card is recognized, then it's just a matter of installing drivers. So, that is all you are looking for, any video displayed when the monitor is connected to the new card. There is one more bios setting that you could try, and the is to look for plug and play options and set that to not let the operating system handle plug and play. This lets all plug and play configuration the responsibility of the bios. Worth a shot, not that I'm real hopeful on that one.

OK, the cmos jumper. It is very close to the bottom of the case near the right hand corner. Look at the last PCI slot closest to the edge and follow it along from the rear of the case, where things plug in, and towards the front. About an inch or so from the corner will be three pins with a jumper cap covering two of them. The motherboard will have CLRTC printed on it. Myself, I need a flashlight and magnifying glass to read anything on a board. Glad to hear there is a coin cell battery, I sure couldn't see one in the picture, but it would be pretty tough to hold bios settings without one.
So give the cmos clear a shot, you would be surprised at how many things that can help.

the battery is in avertical riser according to the layout map, next to the front panel connections.

Re: Paleeaaase.. Pullin my hair out Compaq sr1055cl AGP problems detailed story insid

Ahh, no surprise I couldn't see it in the picture then. Always tend to blame the old eyes first eh.
And speaking of first, just reread the first post. A video display was to be had with a PCI card, but crashed when loading WoW. Very good chance it's the power supply. Pci cards use less power than agp, which in turn uses less than pci-e. Seems like there is enough for low power usage on a pci card, but not enough for demanding use, like a game. Must be right on the line to get a display at all with a pci card.
Can you borrow and larger psu and try that?
