Re: Video card questions

I think we posted at the same time magnethead. I am humbled the contents of my post made it to the mods room!

Let me make sure I understand about memory, remove my current memory and install the memory you listed for a total of 2gb, don't add to my existing memory?

Re: Video card questions

You probably have the stock dell RAM.

Get a memory KIT- a pair of 1 GB matched modules. This replaces your existing RAM stick (keep it on hand, in a static proof bag...you never know what you might need it)

It will work it's not that it's BTX it more like it's a Dell if 500 will work send him to PcP&C for their Dell supplies if he needs higher he can cut out the back of the case the screw holes are in the same places but the back plate needs a little trimming on the left side looking at to fit the power cord socket. It's the XPS Gen 3,4,5 that you can't mount one in.

XPS 400 & 410 Are newer then the Gen3,4,5which are P4's the XPS 400 is a Pentium D(P45 chip set) The 410 C2D 6x00(P965 Chip Set), BTX board, the supply fits just like an atx screw holes line up and all but the stock unit has the power cord on the right hand side looking at the rear and a 750tx has the cord on the left hand side

I am not following this comment, is this saying I should buy a 500w power supply from a place called PcP&C.

I am clear on the memory now, thanks.

Re: Video card questions

no, that's if theirs could run your rig...which 500 wont run a 3870. (PcP&C is PC Power and Cooling)

You're best just using pliers or whatever might be needed to make things work. Which I don't think there's be alot to have to clearance myself.

FYI those quotes are from Wrench97.

I would say if you're willing to spend, a 3870 is great, but if you're on a budget, the 3850 is good as well.

For dual channel to work, both sticks should be identical...so a pair of 1 GB sticks is preferred.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814102794 3850 $90

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...9005&Tpk=650tx 650tx $95 (cyber monday sale has MIR)

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820227189 $22
To finalize this so you can move on magnethead, everything you listed should work? I will have to "tweak" my case to fit the cable for the power supply other than that it will work?(I don't mind doing this as my tower is out of site.)

Either the HD 3850 or HD3870 are good cards that will do what I want? (I think I will try to find a good HD3870 since the price difference is not huge)

I replace my ram with the sticks you have listed?

Re: Video card questions

Correct.

If you have issues, you can report back to use (and you still can if there are not issues).
