Video Card Fan spinning up

I'm new here.. as you can see. :)

Well I've had this problem on my desktop for a while, and just recently on my laptop.

On both, after a bit, the fans fire up really fast in spikes, then calm back down. Usually they are in spurts of a few at a time, and not for more than a second or two for each spike. It happens when I start something more graphic intensive than usual.. such as TES: Morrowind or Runescape in high detail. The desktop is a Compaq Presario SR1936x with XP service pack 3. I've had it the longest. The laptop is a HP dv9720us. Both are completely stock..

I just took the heat sink and fan off the desktop and they were super dusty, which I thought was the root of my problems.. however, cleaning it only seems to have helped slightly.

What would be your remedy?

Re: Video Card Fan spinning up

You removed the heatsink and fan? Did you relace the thermal paste?

What are your temperature readings off both computers? Right now i'm pulling 31°C on desktop, and my DV9000 series laptop usually runs in the 35-50°C range, depending how much i'm covering the vent and how hard i'm working it. It's in the 50's on high performance, open air, running edrawings and what not

Re: Video Card Fan spinning up

I just downloaded and installed SpeedFan 4.37.. upon opening it, the readings on the first screen show CPU at -128C, Ambient at 34C, Remote at 46C, HD0 at 34C, and Temp1 at 40C.

Fan 1 is running around 1630 RPM, and fan 2 is around 1249 RPM.

CPU usage is ~2-5%.

That is all idling.

While running Runescape in HD:

CPU: -128C
Ambient: 33C
Remote: 72C
HD0: 34C
Temp1: 40C

Fan 1 is 2700 RPM, Fan 2 is 2000 RPM. Fan 1 peaks at over 4000 RPM, and Fan 2 peaks around 2500 RPM.

CPU usage peaks around 50-60%, but I think that's Firefox.. it usually uses up a lot of CPU and RAM I think.

~~

The paste looked pretty dried up to me when I pulled it off.

Re: Video Card Fan spinning up

I'm not liking that remote temperature.

Again, did you remove and replace the thermal paste?

If you didn't, i would. If you did...I hope those are laptop readings.

Re: Video Card Fan spinning up

I don't have any spare thermal paste lying around.. Those are readings off my desktop without replacing thermal paste... but as I said, the thermal paste didn't seem to.. pasty when I pulled off the heat sink. It was similar to the remnants of a pulled-off sticker.

Re: Video Card Fan spinning up

Will thermal paste fix my problem? Or do you think it is something else?
