Problem with XFX GeForce 8800 Ultra Video Card

Hey guys, I have purchased this card recently and felt that I haven't been getting the performance I paid for. From what I've heard, it's a pretty high-end card that can play high-end games almost flawlessly, however this is not the case for me. In most games, the game auto-detects my maximum resolution to be 1024x768, when the regular resolution I played on with my much older ATI card was 1280x1024. The card claims to support much higher resolutions than that. Also, I need to turn down the filtering options such as Anisotropic and Trilinear filtering so that my game could run more smoothly. Could any of those problems be related to my RAM, i have 2 gigs (1x1gb 2x512MB), 3.4ghz processor. Thank you

What Brand and Model PC do you have and Power Supply do have?
Did you upgrade the power supply when you upgraded the video card?

Most likely the power supply. That 8800 Ultra is a power hungry beast. 700W+

Re: Problem with XFX GeForce 8800 Ultra Video Card

I have a dell dimension xps generation 5. I bought the video card and then had to updgrade the power supply later on because it didn't have the p4 connector. The only option i had to upgrade to was 650 Watt power supply from 450. The card requires 500 watts of power to operate perfectly according to the manufacturers website.

Re: Problem with XFX GeForce 8800 Ultra Video Card

650 is small for a 8800 Ultra for 8800GT or 9800GT it's ok, But I know with the Gen 5's and the proprietary psu that you don't have a choice.

The fact that your only getting a resolution of 1024x768 makes me think it may be a driver issue or that your running out of cpu if you can play something in windowed mode with task manager running on top and watch the cpu usage lets see if it's topping out.
Also check the cpu temp with speed fan or Everest.

Usually that is total junk. What they tell you is the minimum requirement, we can tell you the recommended requirement.

Re: Problem with XFX GeForce 8800 Ultra Video Card

so what am I to do? If you guys are sure it's a PSU problem, then idk...I can't buy another PSU because my case doesn't support it. Any suggestions that aren't bizarre?

P.S I really appreciate all the help I've been given so far.

Re: Problem with XFX GeForce 8800 Ultra Video Card

Dell got smart and the newer XPS's use an ATX bolt pattern. But the 3, 4, and 5 use a BTX PSU.
