Nvidia Geforce 8600 vs. 7600 GT

Hi,

I am currently running a 7600 GT graphics card in my computer. A friend has offered me an Geforce 8600 that is simply lying around his office. I have looked for benchmark tests on Tom's Hardware, etc, but can't bring up a direct comparison of the two cards. I have read that the 7600 GT is a good card in the 7 series line, and the 8600 not so good in the 8 series line. All other things equal (such as how I can get the 8600 for free), is it worth swapping the 7600 for the 8600 (ie any "upgrade" whatsoever)?

Thanks.

It may be worth it, but will your power supply be ample?

Re: Nvidia Geforce 8600 vs. 7600 GT

The 8600 line is the second best of the 8 series, next to the 8800 line. Id say the 8600 is better than the 7600. But it definately needs more power than the 7600.

The 8600 is over twice the speed of the 7600 , even when the 7600 is in sli.

Re: Nvidia Geforce 8600 vs. 7600 GT

Thanks for the responses! I have a 400W power supply, powering a modest amount of periphreals (1 hard drive, 2 optical drives, and a floppy drive). My processor is a AMD Athlon 3800+. Considering the rest of the hardware, I think there should be enough juice to power the 8600.
