Artifacts on screen after installing graphics card and power supply
I recently purchased an Nvidia 8500 GT for my HP m7680n desktop PC. When everything was done, I noticed that there now were some artifacts or lines next to my icons and between certain contrasts. I asked about it at Best Buy and looked at some suggestions online, and everything pointed to needing a new power supply to support the card. So, I went out and got a Dynex 400-Watt power supply. After that was installed, nothing changed. I still have the lines on my screen. This was not a problem before installing the Graphics card, and power supply so it's not the screen. Any suggestions???
Thank you much. This forum is a lot of help. Whenever I run into a snag, this is where I go. Thnx, colordive |

Re: Artifacts on screen after installing graphics card and power supply
I'd think it's the power supply. It has 2 12 volt rails which output 14 and 15 amps. The 15 amp rail (12V2) connects only to the ATX12V connector. Doesn't leave much for everything else. You should try another larger one (500+ watts) of a quality brand. There's a review at Hardware Secrets that'll give you nightmares. Well, maybe not, but it's not good. Here's a link to the conclusions. http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/557/10

Re: Artifacts on screen after installing graphics card and power supply
Thanks for info and quick response. I surely hope my power supply is not lower wattage than what it specifies. My graphics card says the minimum requirements are a 300 watt power supply, but that is what I originally had and it apparently did not support it. I guess my only option is to upgrade once again. THanks for you help!

Re: Artifacts on screen after installing graphics card and power supply
Your welcome. The psu's at Best Buy aren't very good quality, it's the same at most of the big box stores. Look for brands such as Corsair, SeaSonic, Silverstone, PC Power and Cooling, Thermaltake "Toughpower", Cooler Master "Real Power Pro", OCZ has been making some good ones lately too. The sticky in the psu section will help. Power Supply Information and Selection

Re: Artifacts on screen after installing graphics card and power supply
THank you both for everything! I may just go ahead and order that Corsair one off of newegg. Looks like a good one. Btw, here is a picture as an example of what I see. The lines after the black line should not be there.

Re: Artifacts on screen after installing graphics card and power supply
have you ajusted your monitor screen from the monitor menu or from nview
one of them should move the screen over to remove the black bar on the left artifacts are different your whole screen has a problem with artifacts it can be tearing or blocks over the screen

Re: Artifacts on screen after installing graphics card and power supply
It's not the black bar that is the problem. It is shadows or faint lines after the black bar, to the right. This problem happens by icons and other objects on the screen.
Here is a better example. The artifacts or lines are after the wings of this butterfly. Some on the left side as well. http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i1...eenlinesb1.png |

Re: Artifacts on screen after installing graphics card and power supply
Sorry it took so long to reply. I've went through a lot trying to get this problem solved. I ended up purchasing a Corsair 550W power supply online, but when I got it, it turned out it was missing a 4 prong connector that I needed, so I had to send it back. I ended up trying out another power supply from Best Buy, that being an Antec 500W power supply. Well, this one doesn't seem to work either. I'm going to include a couple of links, this time with photos I took of my screen to try and show you exactly what I'm dealing with.
http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i1...e/IMG_0981.jpg http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i1...e/IMG_0977.jpg In both you can see lines. On the first one, the lines are coming into the picture from the left, and on the second the lines are going into the blue area from the left. They show up beside my mouse at certain points and where ever there are just the right changes in contrast. Now all of this started after installing the graphics card. Probably just need to try getting a more powerful power supply again, this time making sure it has all the connectors. Please tell me what you think. Thanks for all the help. : ) |

Re: Artifacts on screen after installing graphics card and power supply
Sorry it took so long to reply. I tried what you suggested Dai, actually tried it a couple times. It didn't change anything, but what did change, is the fact that I somehow got a corrupt system file somewhere along the line, that prevented me from accessing my OS. I didn't have a copy on a CD-ROM, to fix the problem, so I had to buy a new disk, which had to be Vista, so now I have a new operating system, which came along with a bunch of new problems that I had to fix. Namely the resolution, which is fine, but won't let me make it as high of a resolution as before. I reinstalled my monitors driver, and that did not seem to help. So, I have a new OS, a lower resolution, and the same screen artifacts as before. I am still using the Antec 500W power supply. I've gone through the process of uninstalling and reinstalling a new power supply twice now. I guess I would try purchasing another more powerful PS, hoping that it will fix the problem. So, unless you have another suggestion, I will have to save up some money and purchase a new PS some time in the near future. Thanks for all your help everyone.

Re: Artifacts on screen after installing graphics card and power supply
monitor drivers are usually included in the windows drivers
you should only need to install your video driver what is listed for the monitor in the device manager what video driver did you install

Re: Artifacts on screen after installing graphics card and power supply
I downloaded the monitor driver given at samsung.coms download center, for the SyncMaster 940bw. It was Driver (ver. 1.0). The video driver I installed was the NVIDIA GeForce 8500 GT.

Re: Artifacts on screen after installing graphics card and power supply
the NVIDIA GeForce 8500 GT is your video card not the version of the driver you installed
can you try your card in another computer to check the card

Re: Artifacts on screen after installing graphics card and power supply
I don't have another computer to test my card in, unfortunately. Maybe I could uninstall the driver and software, take out the card and put it back in, and reinstall everything. I have a feeling that won't fix anything. I'll probably have to get a better power supply again.

Re: Artifacts on screen after installing graphics card and power supply
I will see if Best Buy will assist me. In the mean time, I'm going to install the Windows 7 beta version. I doubt that will change anything. Upgrading to Vista didn't help. So, it really seems to be only a hardware issue. Either with the power supply or the card. I will check in with you when I get the card tested. THank you for you patience and assistance.
