Raedon HD4850 card causing computer to restart
Just bought a new graphics card - a Sapphire Raedon HD4850. I slotted it into my computer and tried turning the computer on. However, once windows started up and showed my desktop, the computer instantly restarted itself. It got to my desktop again next time and restarted itself again, once more and the same result.
Any idea what could be causing this? I have only been running quite a low spec graphics card in the past and never experienced any similar problems. Is this likely to be a problem with the card or something else? My housemate suggested that my power supply is possibly not good enough. I'm running Windows XP home by the way. Any help is greatly appreciated |

Re: Raedon HD4850 card causing computer to restart
As I've been feeling the same problems with the same Gfx card, I can now tell you its a PSU problem. To sum things up these top of the line cards need a lot of power and that can't be measured by Watts alone, you'll need to make sure you have available something like 26A on your 12V rail line. New PSU's make available something like 70-80A on a single 12V line - search the web for a Corsair TX750W and you'll know what I mean.

Re: Raedon HD4850 card causing computer to restart
An HD4850 card will be looking for like 30 amps on the 12v rail and a 650-700w quality psu
Seasonic - any model Corsair - any model Thermaltake - "Toughpower" series only Coolermaster - "Real Power Pro" series only PC Power & Cooling - any model Silverstone - any model |

Re: Raedon HD4850 card causing computer to restart
Thanks so much for all the help everyone.
I have found this PSU by Corsair, seems like a pretty reasonable price to me. Will this definitely be sufficient for my graphics card? http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...ompliant%20PSU Thanks again EDIT: Also found this slightly cheaper: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Netzteil-The...5929329&sr=1-4 And this a lot cheaper, but I feel it probably isn't good enough for what I need: http://www.amazon.co.uk/650W-Extreme...5929525&sr=1-2 Any advice on which one of those is best, or if I can get a cheaper one elsewhere is very welcome. Re: Raedon HD4850 card causing computer to restart
I would rather have the single rail Corsair 750TX over the Thermaltake Qfan series with 4 rails to hard to balance the load across the rails.

Re: Raedon HD4850 card causing computer to restart
Ok thanks very much wrench. The Corsair one is £80 with postage and I can get this for £68. Will this one still be good enough?

Re: Raedon HD4850 card causing computer to restart
Just thought I would let you know:
I bought the Corsair 650W power supply (found out that a shop down the road from me had them in stock for £69!). Everything is working perfect now. Thanks very much for all the help wrench and everyone else who contributed. |
