[SOLVED] Problem with display, due to bad graphics card?
Hi all,
I hope you can help me, and I hope this is in the right section but O.K.. First of all some information. I have: Windows XP SP 3 (later I tried Vista) 2 gig RAM Gigabyte P31 motherboard Nvidia GeForce 6800 ULTRA Intel dual core E6750 processor Today I was doing my usual anti-spy and virus checks and also clicked on CC cleaner. Normally I just only clean the internet stuff but today I thought lets see what CC cleaner says when I scan for faulty registry items. It gave plenty of items so I clicked on repair, and chose for the back-up mode. I left my computer on and when I came back everything was still fine, untill hours later when I was playing CS:S and my monitor started displaying weird colors and the current map in the server I was playing in was really weird. I tried alt TAB but that didn't work, CTR-ALT-DEL wouldn't work either. So when i rebooted with the reboot button the motherboard + hardware information + windows loading screen were there but instead of the normal consistent colors in the screens there were dots here and there, and after windows loaded the screen was just full of weird colors. To make a long story short, going into safe mode and clicking on the saved back-up items didn't work, doing windows XP backup didn't work, formatting C and reinstalling windows didn't work, I even tried installing Vista (I normally have XP SP3) and that also gave the weird dots and in the end a BSOD. So in the beginning I thought I (well CC cleaner) messed up the registry but I hoped that formatting C and reinstalling XP would solve it, why wouldn't it because it's a new registry right? But later I thought normally when there are display faults one normally points at the graphics card. I guess something could be wrong the graphics card but nothing "weird" happened to it this afternoon, it didn't fall or anything. I've had it since the end of 2005, but I don't really know what the life-cycle of a graphics card is. What do you think? A messed up registry that's still giving problems after a reformat and install or a broken graphics card that has nothing to do with the first time registry cleaning of CC cleaner? Thank for your time!! Oh what I forgot to say; when I completed the reinstall of Windows XP the dots where still there, I created my account and when I entered my account I got the default back ground, nothing seemed wrong. I have a folder containing important .exe's that I need when I've reinstalled windows. One of them is the video driver from nVidia support since my cd got damaged. I installed the video driver via the wizard and rebooted. Again there were dots, and when I entered my account the default background colors were completely different. Like you take a normal picture and then want to take the same one but then in negative option. Then I gave up and tried Vista but that didn't work out. I'm already looking for new video cards. I hope it's that simple and that it just requires a replacement. Thanks!! Last edited by dai; 10-20-2008 at 07:12 PM. |

Re: Problem with display, due to bad graphics card?
cccleaner is the last thing on this earth i would use for registry cleaning
what are you running video card cpu m/board ram power supply brand wattage check the listings in the bios for voltages and tempretures and post them the life of a video card can be hours to many years to reload the video drivers in xp,download them and save them to desktop where they are easy to access then in the device manager uninstall the video card reboot tapping f8 and choose vga mode when windows finishes rebooting disable a/virus install your drivers reboot the computer reinstall them so we know that they are installed ok and eliminate the driver as the cause

Re: Problem with display, due to bad graphics card?
Ccleaner is a good prog for cleaning junk. It has been reported to be not the best at cleaning the Register. A better altertnative is Registry seeker.

Re: [SOLVED] Problem with display, due to bad graphics card?
I'd like to thank you guys for helping me out.
The problem was solved eventually. Apparently more people had/have the same problem. it has something to do with the drivers. I did have to upgrade from a GeForce 6800 Ultra to 9600 GT though. Anyway thanks, and thanks for the advice of not using CC cleaner for registry purposes. |
