Twisted NVIDIA 9600GT broke?

I've recently had some video problems. I came here for some suggestions and ended up buying a new card and a new PSU. I got the card a week ago, I've been using it since.
Today, while running a game, the display went black. The monitor's power was still on, computer sounded like it was running fine,like nothing happened. Without any other option, I had to forcibly turn off the computer. Upon rebooting, I noticed that there were various dots, patterns, lines across the screen, a similar symptom from my old card. The systems boots just beyond the Windows logo, then it gets stuck and reboots again. Occasionally, I see a flash of blue screen. Not everytime though.
I've tried updating drivers, reinstalling, reinserting the card to no avail. The computer just will not boot up normally as long as the video card is in there. Safemode is accessible.
The only way I can reach my desktop, is to go back to "Last Good Configuration", which takes me back before the GPU driver was installed. I then get a Error, which when sent to Microsoft shows this,

Error Message: STOP 0x000000EA THREAD_STUCK_IN_DEVICE_DRIVER (Q293078)

Other times, I'll get an error message saying something about nv4_disp?

I have a big hunch something went wrong with the GPU. However, I'd like to hear some more professional opinions and possibly some explanations as to what caused this. Thanks!

Acer Aspire M5600/E6600
Intel Core2Duo E6600 2.4Ghz
2GB Ram
NVIDIA GeForce 9600GT
Corsair 550W PSU

(For reference, if needed, this is my previous thread.)

Re: NVIDIA 9600GT broke?

Mini Edit.

The drivers are the problem? Inserting the video card, without installing drivers, will just give me weird looking boot up screens at the beginning. But it continues to work and boots up properly.

I went into Safemode, installed drivers. It prompted me to reboot, I did. On normal reboot, the display will go past the Windows logo, however, I will get a black screen with white dots spread across it all. It flickers a bit. Then I see a flash of a BSOD, and the computer reboots.
I only see the white dots, lines, and other patterns during the beginning of boot up. Once it gets to the Welcome page, all the colors are normal.

*Possibility of the GPU overheating and dying?

Re: NVIDIA 9600GT broke?

If you have the Nvidia control panel installed look under the performance settings for the GPU temp monitor.
It sounds like a driver issue try uninstalling the drivers and the control panel application then reinstalling from the CD you got with the card. make sure you disable any antivirus/malware programs before installing from safe mode if this doesn't cure then you may have to RMA the card.

Re: NVIDIA 9600GT broke?

I cant install it. It'll install, prompt me to restart, then loop before it gets to the Welcome screen.
I'll RMA it soon.

What possibilities are there about the cause? Besides defective product, all I can come up with is overheating. But my PSU is 150W over minimum required, and it's a dual-slot card... It was working fine for a week too.

Re: NVIDIA 9600GT broke?

tap f8 when booting and try
last known good configuration

in the device manager uninstall the video card
reboot tapping f8 and choose vga mode
when windows finishes rebooting
disable a/virus
install your drivers
reboot the computer

@wrench97
Yea, it can go into safemode after installation. The only thing it cant do, is boot up normally, wont get to Welcome screen.

@dai
I'll update again after I try it.

Re: NVIDIA 9600GT broke?

@dai
It didnt work. Right before installation ends, the display goes black, with the flashing "_" near the top left. After 20 seconds or so, the display comes back. An error shows, saying nv4_disp display driver has stopped functioning correctly or something like that. I click Ok. The error disappears, behind it is the next step of installation, rebooting. I reboot. And the same thing that has been happening happens. It loads Windows logo, screen goes black...and after a while a BSOD comes up, and it reboots itself all over again. I tried going into VGA mode, same thing. Finally had to go into safemode and uninstall the driver.

Re: NVIDIA 9600GT broke?

Double...
Yea it did have a power connector and it was plugged in.

It didnt feel extremely hot or anything at all. When you say the power consumption is double, do you mean this specific card, or all NVIDIA in general?

Re: NVIDIA 9600GT broke?

Sounds a little like my problem i have posted before - sometimes its just as simple as the cable connecting your GPU to your monitor goes. Its worth a try, im getting one soon to test mine.

hope this stops you from banging your head against the wall!
