My System

280 gtx or 4870 x2

I'm upgrading my graphics card and am wondering which i should go for.
My motherboard is an asus p5b deluxe, pci express 1.1. Are both of these backwards compatiable? I am upgrading my board soon but one thing at a time. You know how it is!!

yes, very top. No card from nvidia is even close at the current time...give nv a good 6 months to beat it, then ati should haver the 5 series out im sure...or nv will just super duper clock the gtx 280 or something to "claim" to match the 4870...but will never happen.

Re: 280 gtx or 4870 x2

What res are you playing at?

Higher resolutions (IE above 1650x1050) benefit more from the X2 as opposed to the GTX 280. However, if you're playing at 1650x1050 or below, there's just not logical sense in buying the X2 because you won't see a difference in performance.

Re: 280 gtx or 4870 x2

hmm well that's just thrown the cat amongs't the pigeons.
I will be playing 1440 x 900 and want something good for crysis/ farcry 2 and some future stuff.

But then again. i will be upgrading my monitor so the x2 is still a good bet?

Re: 280 gtx or 4870 x2

I'd still say go for the 4760x2.. same price but HD 4870x2 kills the 280 as everyone keeps saying.

This chart is the perfect way of showing that.

Re: 280 gtx or 4870 x2

Just make sure you have enough power supply to handle that power hungry video card. That can be a real issue if you buy one that your power supply can't handle.

Isn't the GTX 260/280 like the 9800's? A pair of cards on a single board?

Not at all!! It's actually a completely different chip design than the 8000/9000 series. They are still power hungry on full load BUT there idle power usuage is better than ATi's cards. Not that you would care about that when ur gamming you heart out

So yeah, they could very well bring out a GTX280 X2 to combat the Ati bad boy.
