Staticky flickering lines on black

Hey gurus. Im getting an odd problem on my HP/Compaq 8710w. When the background of the screen is true black (desktop or webpage), I get static like little flickering lines around bright objects on the right part of the screen. Anyone know what might cause this? The Vid card is an Nvidia FX1600M and the screen is matte wuxga. Any help is greatly appreciated. Cheers.

Can you try it using an external monitor to see if it's still there?
I think that Quadro is based on the 8700M chip which may be involved in the overheating issue, I know Dell has put out Bios updates and are extending some warranties so you may want to contact HP to see if yours is involved.

My laptop doesn't seem to fall under that service bulletin. When I get home I will try and hook it up to an external monitor and see what happens. The flickering only appears on black or near black backgrounds and only on the edge of bright items (like icons on a black desktop, or the scroll bar on a black webpage. Thanks for the help so far.

Ok, when plugged in to an external monitor, the problem does not occurr. I've also noticed that the right side of the screen can be a little dark (on white BG) for a few minutes when the machine first powers up. Don't know if this is of any consequence or not. Also, the staticky lines are at a minimum when I first turn on the machine, but after 10 mins or so they are a-jumpin. Again, it only happens on black or near black backgrounds. Really hope I can resolve this without getting a new screen.

Sounds like it's going to either be a connection problem between the video chip and the inverter(circuit board in the top under the screen) or the inverter itself do you have any warranty left on the unit?

No warranty left unfortunately. Any way you know of to test which it would be? Is it possible to replace the inverter?

Yes the inverter can be replaced most of the time you check it by substituting a known good one depending one the inverter used they run anywhere from $45-$90 for common ones. if it's the cable just taking it apart and moving it around or reconnecting it would tell
sometimes the cable goes bad where it passes through the hinge.
