[SOLVED] 9600GT Screen Freezing

Operating System: Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2
CPU: AMD Athlon 6400+ 3.2Ghz DuelCore Black Edition- idle temp "35"
Memory: 2x1GB Corsair XMS2 667Mhz
DirectX Version: DirectX 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904)
GPU: XpertVision Nvidia GeForce 9600GT 512MB idle temp "30"
Motherboard: Asrock ALIVE SATA2GLAN
PSU: 650W corsair http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-008-CS&groupid=701&catid=123&subcat=1084

Problem: screen freezing up with sound still playing while gaming and also flashes then pixelates./ general web browsing ect. the screen freezes and just flashes./ screen turns black with only mouse displayed, but frozen.

Edit: while only looking on this site the screen froze and began to flash needing a reboot.

Is this maybe a dodgy GPU chip?

Re: 9600GT Screen Freezing

Welcome to tsf. Make sure you have the latest bios for your askrock motherboard. I too had a similar problem with mine and found a bios update cured it.

http://www.asrock.com/mb/download.as...TA2-GLAN&s=AM2

Also , make sure your board supports that 9600 gt since its a pci-e 2.0 card and you have a pci-e 1.0 slot. The chipset on the board is a VIA chipset which is known to have all kinds or backward compatibility problems with pci-e 2.0 card in 1.0 slots. You could contact Asrock to see if it supports the 9600 or request a bios update for it.

thankyou for your help, but this appears it wasn't the card or the motherboard, it appears to have been sophos antivirus.
i removed the antivirus to test, and instead of 1FPS in lost planet it now can get over 110 in the system test on it. it was hogging resources i think.
/ either sophos or the onboard sound card, uninstalled that and let it find its own drivers now everything seems cool, for now atleast.

thankyou for your suggestions/
