Evil A multitude of questions, but for the most part Video Card related.

Hello TSF!

I have a few questions. First off, is this card for a PCI or PCI-E slot? *See Attached*

Second, what kind of specs are needed to use this card?
http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/pro...51&catid=25617

Is it a good card for the price? Better than my previous GeForce 8300?

Finally, what kind of power supply is ABSOLUTELY needed to run this? I seem to have a 250W, and I know that'll need to be upgraded, but I have a Inspiron 501s, a very slim PC. Do I need a special type of PSU? Will this cost extra? Less? Will it need any extra hardware?

I aplogize for so many questions in one thread, but I'm desperate for help to all my problems (all stemming from a video card dying on me.)

My specs:
Windows Vista 32-bit (I will switch to XP when I get my new card.. I can handle vista fine, I just prefer XP. Greatly.)
AMD Athlon 64x2 4000+ 2.11ghz running at 6.00ghz
2GB Ram
250W PSU
250GB HDD
No current Video Card

Re: A multitude of questions, but for the most part Video Card related.

For your first question I believe that is a Pci-e card. Try reading here Video Card Support

2nd question I don't know what specs but the site says 450w Psu and you need a Pci-e x16

3rd good price or not, well I also don't know but i have never been ripped off from newegg.com I suggest you check there before you buy.

4th Yes that card is immensely better than your 8300. As for a bit of proof try here VGA Charts

As for you last question I would have to know more about your system but you could check out this calculator. PSU Calcutalor
Or this information.
PSU Info

Hope that helps, sorry I could not answer you directly I'm still learning my self. :) .

It's a PCI-Express card with 16x connections.

Much MUCH better.

I looked this up and all I found were laptops. Confused?

Re: A multitude of questions, but for the most part Video Card related.

I just looked up the computer as well and I also only found laptops. Afrohorse can you check again because I did come across a Inspiron 530s that seemed like it was what you were describing or if you can not find any other model numbers try finding it on line and give us a link so we can better help you.

Jtsou - the 8300 is a motherboard integrated GPU.

Ps. Thanks ebackhus

Re: A multitude of questions, but for the most part Video Card related.

I apologize, I meant a 531s.

Also, thanks for the great replies! VERY helpful!

Also, the 8300 isn't a motherboard-integrated GPU, since that picture I posted is of mine. I believe the full name is a Nvidia GeForce 8300 GS, if that makes a difference.

Re: A multitude of questions, but for the most part Video Card related.

That was my bad I was thinking of a different card sorry and as for you computer needing any sort of special equipment. I do believe or at least any slim Pc that I have worked with you don't need to worry to much about size because of the way the power supply is mounted it fits. I would look up the dimensions of you pc and compare them to the items witch you wish to buy and check it out that way. and if you can not get the dimensions online try a handy dandy tape measure but it will be less precise. In the mean time I will try to look them up for you.

**EDIT **
Well i have to go for now but i did not find anything that was for or against upgrading your computer size wise. I would order from somewhere with a moneybag guarantee or such just in case the new components do not fit. Hopefully someone else will come along who knows more about this individual chassis

Re: A multitude of questions, but for the most part Video Card related.

Thanks Ngouterm!

A terrible thought just crossed my mind.. I don't even think that card will fit in my PC. Just take a look at my current one, it only has one plug for a monitor, the one I want has two.. I don't think that would fit in my small PC case.

I don't know exactly what card you're looking at, but, XFX's 9800GTX has the dimensions of 10.5in L x 3.93in H x 1.26in D. Grab a tape measure or ruler and see how much clearance you've got.
The thread is Here

It dose not help much because this is for the Xfx card but at least its something to go by. Ill keep looking for the actual cards specs in the mean time post the measurements of your comp.

*Edit*
I found the height and length for the Evga card
Height - - 4.376 in or 111.15mm
Lenght - - 10.5 in or 266.7mm
Still looking for the width
The info can be found here
This was from the Evga website.

Re: A multitude of questions, but for the most part Video Card related.

I just tried out the PSU calculator and put 2 latest ATI cards in CrossFire with other stats being typical of what people would use. It just seems weird that the calculator would only recommend 471W for that.

My thoughts on that would be you missed something. Also it is normally better to have extra than not enough, not to mention if you plan on upgrading further. Also if you keep having trouble with it or further questions I would recommend starting another thread.

*Edit*
Also a lot of the lower voltage PSU's do not have the amperage required or recommended for a high end system. I recommend you read Here for better information.
