Computer suddenly restarts. suspected graphics card problem
hey
I'm wondering if anyone might be able to help me out. every time I try to play .AVI or .WMA files my computer suddenly displays the blue error screen then restarts. the same thing happens when I'm attempt to load up high graphics games such as Neverwinter Nights 2 but not low graphics games such as Guildwars. I suspect this is something to do with my graphics card. I'm using a Geforce 8800GTX on XPsp2, 550watt psu, 1GBram and 2.6dual core processor. at a glance I'd say the psu wasn't enough but its been working fine (albeit very hot) for a few months now so I was hoping there was a cheaper solution. Its possible that its finally given in to the stress of the heat. |

Re: Computer suddenly restarts. suspected graphics card problem
Go into device manager and look for any yellow or red flags.
Are you sure the extra power lead is plugged into the video card. Go into bios and check voltages, it wont be under load, but it may give you some sort of idea as to what volts you are putting out. What do you mean by psu is getting hot.

Re: Computer suddenly restarts. suspected graphics card problem
thanks for the quick feedback
theres only one yellow flag up on the device manager under SM bus controller. probably nothing to do with the problem. the extra power lead is plugged into the card. Not sure I'm looking in the right place for the bios. I hit delete as the computer restarted then wnet into PC health status. once again not sure if i was looking in the right place but noted CPU Vcore 1.31V and VDIMM 1.85V. while i was there I also noted the core and system temperatures. 45c and 38c respectively as for the heat. generally back when it was working fine I could start playing the likes of Neverwinter nights 2 or unreal 3 at full graphics and after about half an hour or so the computer would start to feel very hot. the heat was far worse at the Top/back of the case where the power supply is so I assumed that would be the source of the heat. the computer used to crash after about an hour so I removed the side panel in hopes of getting better ventilation and it stopped crashing. Re: Computer suddenly restarts. suspected graphics card problem
The psu is a Colorsit. I hadn't heard of the brand before but it was pretty cheap when i got it so its probably really budget.
I thought I'd approach the problem from a different angle suspecting that it could possibly be a codec error. I tried playing the videos on VLC instead of media player classic and the same error happened. I then uninstalled K-lite codec pack, cleaned the fans on my PSU/graphics card and tried to play the videos on VLC. this time It worked fine. so I assumed it must have been something up with K-lite (I reinstalled it and tried again to check and once again it crashed). I doubt this would explain why games still aren't working though. |

Re: Computer suddenly restarts. suspected graphics card problem
Hello jables2112...
Could you possibly borrow more powerfull PSU from a friend or maybe to take your PC and test it in store where can you get some more powerfull and better maker PSU??? Your graphic card is new? How old is your PC??? You upgrade some components lately??? Last edited by vladimirb; 08-26-2008 at 08:32 AM. |

Re: Computer suddenly restarts. suspected graphics card problem
got the computer a couple of years ago and put in the graphics card in May. the card was new when I bought it.
I've got a friend with a 750watt he might let me test that. I'll maybe use system recovery and roll back before the problem started. that might do the trick. or I could totally reformat. I've not got anything on inpc i can't reinstall anyway. at least that way it'll sort it if its a bug in the software or codecs or whatever |

Re: Computer suddenly restarts. suspected graphics card problem
Hello again...
If PSU is also couple of years old, then I would suggest to buy new PSU... But before you consider buying PSU, test friends PSU... It is recommended to replace PSU every 1,5-2 years... |
