[SOLVED] BFG 7800 GS Hangs and Blue Screens

Hello

I recently purchased a BFG Gefroce 7800 GS (OC) AGP along with a stick of PC3200 Corsair Ram of 1Gb.

I made the upgrade and immediately installed the drivers for the Video Card. I reboot my PC and then went into World of Warcraft and after a few seconds the PC reset with what I would later find out was blue screen with any of the following errors:

PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONE_PAGED_AREA
MEMORY_MANAGEMENT
IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
PFN_LIST_CORRUPT

I thought the problem was either Driver or RAM related so I tried 4 different drivers including old version and swapped out the stick of RAM with a friend's and some old ones I had lying around with little effect.

From time to time the game would also hang/freeze after loading a map or after logging out/exiting and sometimes after exiting it would hang/freeze on my Windows Desktop the hangs generally don't happen because the BSODs happen before they can on some occasions which admitedlly are becoming more frequent the game would run for a while 20-30 minutes and then hang on a loading screen or logout, this happened after I underclocked the card (or in this case clocked it to its default value because the BFG is OCd) to 375/1200. The anomalies are too inconsistent for me to make anything of them but perhaps someone else here can.

My setup is:

ASUS P5PE-VM
1gb of Ram
Intel Celeron D 2.6ghz
BFG Geforce 7800 GS OC
Corsair HX620W

in case temps have anything to do with the prob here they are:

CPU @ 30 degrees C
GPU @ 42 degrees C

Thanks in advance for any help.

Did the message include this Code?........
Stop 0x0000004E
PFN_LIST_CORRUPT

If so, install this update....
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

From what I can see online, this is a memory/driver error, but you need the error code to diagnose it, e.g. Stop 0x0000004E

Re: BFG 7800 GS Hangs and Blue Screens

Hi again
It doesn't give me the driver but it does tell me that the Memory System Page Table Entries have been corrupted.
We can also assume with confidence that adding the video card drivers was the catalyst for this.
What we need to do now, is uninstall the card and clean the system of video/graphics drivers that are not part of XP.
Your BIOS should also be at it's Default Settings, with changes only for the crucial, like USB Keyboard & Mouse Support for example.

This download will help clean the System.........
http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=745
Once downloaded and installed, read the instructions; it's easy to use.

Uninstall all video drivers and software from add/remove programs.
Delete the nVidia Folder you will see on your C:Drive
Go into device manager and right-click on the name of the video card and select uninstall. Restart in Safe Mode and cancel XP looking for drivers if it tries.

Run the downloaded Driver Cleaner and select the nVidia video/graphics "filters" (do not select the WDM nVidia drivers filter)
Also add the manufacturer of any previous video drivers you've used, like ATI for example. (Once again do not select any WDM drivers)

Once Driver Cleaner is finished, Restart but Press F8 again to get the Advanced Startup Options. Choose to start in VGA Mode.

If XP wants to look for drivers, Cancel.
Now disable/stop any non-Microsoft Programs or Services that may be running, like Ant-Virus etc.
Install the latest drivers for your video card and restart again.

Re: BFG 7800 GS Hangs and Blue Screens

The Blue screens dont happen anymore, at least I haven't see one all day! However the system hangs still do :/, could this be related to a PSU issue in any way?

Re: BFG 7800 GS Hangs and Blue Screens

Are you having other issues that would suggest power instability/failure?

From what I know about power supplies, they can be responsible for all sorts of errors but Corsair are among the best and the model you have is one the best of the Corsair PSU's.
What have been your previous Video Cards, any ATI's?
OC'd cards can cause some driver problems, whether factory OC'd or not. Have you experimented with different driver versions?

Re: BFG 7800 GS Hangs and Blue Screens

I used to own a Sapphire X1550 and before that a Radeon 9600SE.

I have tried different drivers for the 7800GS:

Omega nVidia drivers
175.19 (most recent nVidia drivers)
81.56
and the box default which I believe is 71.something.

all of them brought about some errors.

Re: BFG 7800 GS Hangs and Blue Screens

Sadly, nVidia and ATI drivers don't get along too well and never completely remove themselves from your drive or registry.
I believe your best course of action is to get rid of all those previous nVidia and ATI drivers and references that are on your system, apart from the WDM ones, and give your 7800 a fresh install.
Refer to my previous post with regard to Driver Cleaner etc.

Re: BFG 7800 GS Hangs and Blue Screens

Still no luck :(.

I guess i'll return the card, I will trade it for a HD 2600 XT. Its a shame the short periods of time during which the card did run the WoW ran very smoothly on full graphics, wondering how the HD 2600 XT will compare, I'll let you know if I get the same errors with that one too in which case ill go nuts!

Re: BFG 7800 GS Hangs and Blue Screens

Undercloked to 275/1000 and slowed the AGP port to 4x the game ran for a full 2 hours with logins and logouts, loading screens etc before crashing on a blue screen :/ sadly it doesn't seem as if those have completely left yet.

Alex
Reinstall your Chipset Drivers.
Then go to Start, then Run, and type in.. msconfig
click on ok. and you're taken to the System Configuration Utilty
click on the Startup tab and disable everything
Restart, and try a game at your best settings
See if it makes a difference.

Done with no effect. Could this be hardware related?

Do you have the Integrated Graphics disabled in BIOS?
Are any of the drivers for the Integrated Graphics still installed?

Re: BFG 7800 GS Hangs and Blue Screens

Went into Cpanel -> System -> device manager and from there into system devices and saw a number of lines which seemed to be related to the intergrated graphics, I went to unistall the one that had AGP and it also said my nVidia drivers should/would be removed, how should I proceed?

Re: BFG 7800 GS Hangs and Blue Screens

How many entries do you have under Display Adapters?
You should have one! The 7800GS.

If more than one, go to Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel and Uninstall ALL drivers you have loaded for Video/Graphics. (ATI, Intel & nVidia and any others)
Now, go back to Device Manager and right-click on each entry under Display and select Uninstall.

Restart, and Press F8 repeatedly until you get the Advanced Startup Options
Choose to Start in VGA Mode
If windows wants to search for drivers, click on Cancel
Disable any non-Microsoft Programs or Services like Anti-Virus etc and Install the nVidia drivers for the 7800.

Restart again and look in Device Manager to ensure you are using just the one Display driver; the 7800. If all is well, adjust your Display Properties to suit.

Now, that should work, but if it does not you are going to have to change some BIOS Settings. Let us know how it goes.
