Half-Height Card

So my boss wants me to find him a half-height graphics card that is dual head.

However he does have one that can work on another computer but it would need a new power supply.

So should I tell him to get a new power supply or a graphics card.

Also he cant spend to much so what would be most cost effective and the card he has now is dual head 1GB.

-Thanks

Re: Half-Height Card

Hi, Alias
Why not swap both the graphics cards and PSU's over?

(Incidentally, a "half-height" card is properly known as Low-Profile)

Re: Half-Height Card

he would rather not have too and the computer that is low profile is bit better than the other computer.

Also he would like to speed less on upgrading it.

Re: Half-Height Card

Yes, but the PC that already has the dual head graphics card must have a power supply, no?
So why not put both in the best PC?
That way, you only need to buy any old card for the 2nd PC.
Will the PSU not fit?

If you're asking what's cheaper, a graphics card or a power supply, then I'd need to ask a few questions; like what do you use the PC for, budget etc.

But....a quality power supply and a mid-range graphics card cost about the same.

Re: Half-Height Card

well the graphics card would have to be low-profile which is not easy to find at a cheap price.
The old graphics cards work fine but they aren't dual head.

Must be the same sort of deals in the US & Canada, Australia etc.
(You do know you can buy Y splitters for graphics card to 2 monitors?)

Re: Half-Height Card

Hi,
Monitors on a splitter would have the same Display Properties I'm afraid, which would be determined by your graphics card settings.
Obviously you need a card that is capable of multiple displays that you can adjust individually. On the plus side that's most modern cards, which either have two DVI slots or a VGA and a DVI/HDMI.
But you sound like you're needing a professional type card, and these would be the Matrox, nVidia Quadro and ATI Fire cards.

Re: Half-Height Card

A new cabinet that supports full-height cards + normal dual-heal card might be cheaper than an overpriced low-profile card.

Low profile, cheap , and dual head. Also is low end so doesn't require a psu upgrade.

This geforce 8600 http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=340007 is sitting in my small-form factor HP. When used with the low-profile bracket, it got a DVI and an HDMI outputs. And it runs OK on a 240 W PSU.

Re: Half-Height Card

Hmm, this one with identical name (but different SKU) is from the place I got mine http://www.komplett.no/k/ki.aspx?sku=339922 and it's definitely half-height with replacement bracket.
