Nvidia 8600M GS works with Standard VGA, not with Nvidia drivers
I have problems with my Acer 7520g laptop with Nvidia 8600M GS. I also posted about the problem in Vista support, but now narrowed it down to video card (after running HDD and memory tests).
I had couple of freezes on my laptop (screen frozen, no bluescreen, logs, events or anything). After the problems I returned restored backup but it didnt help (Vista didn't start). Factory reset of Vista didn't help either (Installation stopped at some point) After reinstalling Vista with recovery dvd of another computer I got Vista running, but only with Standard VGA driver. I tried several Nvidia drivers, starting with the ones from Acer webpages and laptopvideo2go one, but result was always the same: Vista loading stopped after loading bar and before login screen. As factory reset also installs nvidia driver, it would explain why restore fails. I'm thinking 8600m GS has problems with memory or something else that works with Standard VGA but fails when "real" driver tries to use the card to the fullest. Is it possible for the video card to be broken in this way, working on VGA but nothing else?

Re: Nvidia 8600M GS works with Standard VGA, not with Nvidia drivers
Hi Zemalf
Do you have the chipset drivers installed? If not, uninstall the video drivers, restart and install the chipset ones and restart again. Now, if needed, install the video drivers. I can get no further than the home page for Acer, otherwise I'd give you a better link.... http://www.acerpanam.com/flex/acer/bin/acer.html# Last edited by Houndog777; 08-20-2008 at 05:45 PM. |

Re: Nvidia 8600M GS works with Standard VGA, not with Nvidia drivers
Download the driver from LaptopVideo2Go and the inf file. Replace the inf file in teh driver with the modded one. Uninstall every nvidia driver in Add and remove programs. Use Driver Cleaner to remove all aspects as well in Safe MOde. Restart in safe mode again, and install the new driver. Restart normally.

Any version of video driver didn't help, so it had to be hardware problem.
True enough, the Acer 7520g video card was somehow broken and replaced by Acer support/maintenance. I don't know the details, as the repair details just stated "Video card replaced". with replaced video card everything works OK. But anyway, this particular problem was solved.
