Before I Die ..
I don't want this post to become my legacy and "I'm sure" that none of you want to read about the last two months of my life 'but' .. this is going to take a lot of your reading time, and patience, "I am also sure".
Six months ago, the colors on my display, went south. Nothing that I have tried, would or can return the colors to their original settings. (believe me, I have tried Everything) It isn't the monitor or connections. Called Gateway, the folks who made this machine. Answer, from one of the techs: Get a new video card, (visionteks Radeon HD 2400 Pro pci express). THAT has become the Bane of my existence now! I have done Everything to install this thing and make it work! Because I don't like to beg others for help, (and because I am Really Hard Headed), I have spent Weeks taking this 'Thing', (card) in and out of my pc! After Millions of "Curse You's", a friend of mine sent me a link to You guys! Let me back up, just a little and tell you that .. I Did correspond with a Gateway Tech, an ATI tech, a Geek Squad 'pretender' , And .. my mother in-law who's been dead for a number of years! They ALL gave me the same step by step instructions that I have seen given 'Here', on this very forum! You know the ones: Go to safe mode, delete onboards, shut down, boot to BIOS change this and that, shut down again .. put in new card, boot to BIOS .. Yadda, Yadda, Yadda .. Heck, it is all well and good "Until" you come to the part where you connect your monitors cord to the new card and .. BOOT back into Bios to Change Something else! The problem here is: My monitor gets No Signal after connecting to the new card so .. I can't See to boot into BIOS. Heck, I have never been able to hook my monitor's cable directly to the 'Original card' and see anything on my monitor .. Never. I've always had to connect it to the VGA connection that apparently runs through the onboard video chip and then passes through the generic .. "came with the pc card"!? Without ever being able to do that last, "connect to the new card and boot to BIOS" step .. "I have" gotten as far as to where the "discovered new hardware" popup appears. Even my Hardware Manager will show .. 'Something' like: vga device with a ? mark beside it. Thats It! From that moment on Everything starts running as if it is going through some kind of basic set-up. (onboard video chip?) I have tried and tried to get the drivers from the cd that came with this "Thing", (video card) and it will go through all the steps and then .. Load Forever. Eventually I have to use Task Manager to get out of the loading/not loading screen. I get two messages after exiting: (1) "You Have to be at Net 2.0 or better", which I am, and then, message number (2) which is the 'Really Strange' one: "Remote Protocol Procedure Failed!" HUH? What The Heck .. Is That? Even went and down-loaded the same drivers from the Omega Drivers site thinking that my driver cd was bad and I get the very same messages when I try to download their stuff!? What I would Really like to know .. Before I Die: How do I get something on my screen during the last part of the instructions where everyone say's .. connect your monitors cable to the new card .. Now!? I know this has been a long post and all of us have aged .. a little, but .. count your blessings youngins, I'm an 86 year old fart, not too smart and My last goal in life is to get this new fangled card of mine to work! Re: Before I Die ..
First, you imply you installed a NEW video card and it's installed in a PCI slot. Correct?
Second, you have 2 monitor connections, one is an on-board connection, correct? Connect to the motherboard card. If you do get video, then go into BIOS Setup and check to see if you have alternate video settings. Example, to use PCI video card vs on-board. I had a very old motherboard that I had to set to use the PCI video before it would show up in Windows, but you did not have to disable the on-board, and you could still use the on-board during boot. At your WinXP desktop...
IF there is a error icon on a entry, it is saying you do not have the correct drivers installed. Try installing the drivers at this point. IF it's the on-board video, the drivers should be on the CD that came with your Gateway. Once everything looks OK, close Device Manager and SHUT DOWN your system. Now connect your monitor to your new video card & boot. You should now get video via your new card and get to the desktop. At this time, it is up to you IF you want to disable the on-board video. BUT BE CAREFUL - the safest way is to go to Device Manager as above, right-click the on-board video card then select Disable. DO NOTHING ELSE. Once you have your system video running off your new card for a few weeks, only then go into BIOS Setup and disable the on-board video card. I assume you found the Gateway GM5045E Support Page

Re: Before I Die ..
Actually , he said pci-express. Not pci.
To tell you the truth , that card will most likely not work in that machine. You have nvidia onboard graphics and an ati card. The nvidia drivers will conflict with ati's causing it to not work. You probably should have gotten an nvidia equivalent. Such as an 8400. That ati and nvidia graphics probably won't work with each other even if the onboard is disabled.

Re: Before I Die ..
Thank You both for your responses.
Before I went out and bought this new card, I talked to a tech from Gateway, online. The tech ran my pc specs and He is the one who told me to get this card. I have been in contact with Gateway and their techs since I bought this card and they ALL swear that This is the card that I Must upgrade to. Regardless, are you trying to tell me that these company's have some sort of hidden device in my pc that rejects another companies hardware? My eyes have started to glaze over again ..I think that I may go lie down. (Old people do that ALOT) LOL Mc Last edited by mrclose; 08-05-2008 at 10:34 PM. |

Re: Before I Die ..
tecknomage,
As per my other post, I Can't connect to the new video card .. Ever .. and get anything on my monitor. Heck, I have Never been able to connect .. Directly to the Original card and get anything on my monitor! As I tried to say in my first post .. I NEVER go looking for someone to solve my problems for me IF I haven't done everything that I can to find an answer for myself. Yes, I have been All Over Gateways site and have actually been a BIG pest as far as their techs are probably concerned! LOL You learn by your failures I always say and I have failed ALOT this time and not learned very much. That is why I came to you folks. MC |

Re: Before I Die ..
The ati driver architecture is different from nvidia. The onboard and card probably just won't fuction together. I've seen it happen before.
The tech from gateway was probably one of those "graduated from tech school" guys. Peice of paper says he knows video cards , but probably was just getting his answers from a pretyped screen solution. Also , gateway isn't the best of pc companies. I've heard their tech support is very bad. Also , when you reply to topics , they automatically move to the top. It also sends me an email everytime somone replies.

Re: Before I Die ..

I didn't know that. (post moves when someone answers) Thank You. Can you tell me Why, even when I connect my monitor to the Original video card .. It just wont display, or turn the monitor on? And I am not talking about just when I started fooling around with this video card mess. My monitor has Never worked with that connection from the day I took the whole system out of the box. You'd think that connecting directly to the video card would surely work but .. no, I have always had to connect to the secondary vga. MC |
