Video card locking me in safemode.

This problem cropped up after running 3d applications I noticed my screen’s colors get jumbled. Soon it was no longer possible to run win XP in normal mode. I’m completely restricted to safe mode.

If I scroll in Mozilla or Explorer my screen becomes filled with a yellow tinge that can then disappear if I block select text or minimize then maximize.

My specs
Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 (build 2600)
(despite having autoupdate on my computer never installed service pack 3 , further more as I’m stuck in safe mode I can’t seem to get the ms server to give it to me.)

1. 2.13 gigahertz Intel Core 2 Duo
64 kilobyte primary memory cache
2. 2048 kilobyte secondary memory cache
3. WDC WD2500KS-00MJB0 [Hard drive] (250.06 GB) -- drive 0, s/n WD-WCANKE771758, rev 02.01C03, SMART Status: Healthy ( I chkdsked this and got no errors)
4. Asus Striker Extreme Motherboard ,1333 MHz
5. NVIDIA GeForce 8400 GS PCI – Express [Display adapter]
6. No virus scanner. (very stupid I will admit but I routinely back up all my files and rarely get hassled with viruses), ( I’ve attempted to download avg but because of safemode I can’t seem to install anything.)

I’m not sure actually how to proceed now. I’m under the impression that this is a potential hardware error because of the nature of the graphical anomilies I’m having but I’m not sure how to run diagnostics on this hardware. Does anybody have any ideas how I should proceed as I’m stuck here in safemode?

I have no other computer that I can test my hardware in to test it’s functionality.

Re: Video card locking me in safemode.

Never heard of it, cant seem to find specs on it either which is never
a good thing, like there hiding something. You need at least 26amps on
the 12volt rail just to run the video card. In these days and times
a 450watt no name psu just aint going to cut it. That may or may
not be your problem but that is where I would start.

Re: Video card locking me in safemode.

Sorry i misread the name of the PSU because of the font of one letter on teh box :( The PSU is an NSpire MFG Part No: NSP-450P4LF12.

Here is a link.

http://www.asipartner.com/products/c....asp?sku=31074

and i found this
- Total Continuous Output 450W
+5V 30A
+12V1 15A <-----
+12V2 17A <----
+3.3V 32A
+5Vsb 2.0A

I'm guessing the arrows are were i'm coming up short ?
My PSU was a little bit older then the components therin(which are relatively new) so this makes sense. I guess it was pulling double duty and finally snapped ?

Thanks again manic for taking the time, do you mind a follow up question ? What wattage should i look for ? what's a good brand PSU to buy ? I was thinking of getting rid of my Nvidia 8400 soon and upgrading for gaming purposes, if i go with the latest and greatest might i need more then 26 amps ?

Re: Video card locking me in safemode.

I like the corsair 750watt. It can be had at newegg, under 120 Bucks
after rebate. Good quality and one 12v rail @60amp. That is one
strong psu. Linderman the moderator here knows of another site that
are selling those psus even cheaper, like 107bucks. Maybe try pm ing
him so he can give you the link. Stay away free cheap psus, only
trouble...

Re: Video card locking me in safemode.

I have to ask, i was able to get my hand on a rocket fish 700 W. When i checked with best buy this was their top of the line PSU, not only that but every model on their floor could not had about the same amperage. This one happens to have only 4 x 12 v rails , with a combined A of 41. Despite this power i'm still back where i started, locked in safemode. Do i have to reconfigure Bios or my MB setup to direct power properly ? I dunno where to go from here, i just tired of being in safemode.

update :

This is getting worse, i went into my bios and noticed anomylous segmented red pixel columns across my bios set up screen at regular intervals. This is not normal. My intention was to try to look at power settings i noticed that my 12V is at 11.64V but i'm much more troubled with these pixels now.

Re: Video card locking me in safemode.

Never seen that before. Cant remember have you tried a different
video card? See if that clears up this red pixelation. The only thing
that could do that is video, or a bad mobo.
