halp meh??!?!
Well to start out last week I installed a new video card. The previous one was a Nvidia 7300gs and i now have an Nvidia 8600GT.
The problem is... my computer freezes now. it only seems to happen when I am using the internet (firefox browser). and it doesnt happen everytime Im using it. just at random times. when it freezes i hear 1 beep then i cannot move my mouse or type anything and sometimes my screen flickers black on and off. I did also get a new LCD display (dell 22") running on a DVI input instead of VGA (not sure if that matters) My stats are as follows (Im a girl so hopefully i type it all computer smart like) PowerSupply: 400w 2.3ghz Dual-Core processor 2g A-data DDR2 800 ram (2 1gig sticks) Asus M2V motherboard (just downloaded an updated chipset on their site which didnt fix the problem. doubt my bios is up to date, but Idk if that would fix the problem or be the problem.) ummm.... did i forget anything? It has 4 fans excluding videoc card, heatsink, and power supply fan. 2 on back 1 on top and 1 on the side. I have 4 more i could mount but i have to drill holes to mount them and I dont do that handy type stuff. but i dont think its a heat issue its not running hot as far as i can tell. I called Asus but the guy was more of an idiot than me. didnt help that he hardly spoke a lick of english. anyways, Any Ideas? I'd like to fix this :( so far Ive gotten through this whole post without freezing. It seems like if i have multiple windows open it freezes but it could just be coincidence. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Re: halp meh??!?!
Hey and welcome to TSF...
Could you please tell us what make/model is your Power Supply??? There should be a tag or sticker or something similar on Power Supply inside the case... Since you have get powerful graphic card [8600GT] Then your old one [7300GS] it could be Power Supply, especially if it is few years old... By the way, for how long do you have this PC??? Did you bought PSU separately from case or it came together [usually PSU that come with case are low-lever junk]... Maybe you should consider buying new PSU, like 550+W... Also, did you ever cleaned case from inside??? Maybe it is over-heating too... And last one thing, did you install new graphic driver or you are using existing one??? Even if they are both NVIDIA, you should uninstall old driver and install new one... Hope this will help you...

I do take one of those "air cans" and spray all the dust out of there quite often. about 1 time a month. sometimes more depending how much dust gets in it. I did uninstall the video drivers and reinstall them when i got it but maybe i should try it again? I mean it couldnt hurt right? haha. and I probably will upgrade the power supply in a few months, but i have a feeling thats not what is causing it. :-\ I mean who knows, but I just bought a $300 monitor and then the video card as well, so at the moment I dont feel like running out to spend a bunch more on a power supply only to find out its not the problem. ya know? do you think not having an up to date BIOS would be a problem? the ASUS tech guy said it wouldnt, but he didnt speak very good english and was rushing me off the phone. very poor customer service on their part. also, he suggested I take out 1 stick of ram but i didnt do that. he said to test and see if its a problem with the ram but i cant imagine only having 1gig of ram *Dies* |

Re: halp meh??!?!
Hello Alissa
In order to help you Vladmirb needs the power supply information on the side on the part. Power of your PC and remove the side cover then record the make name and the model number or name also the rated watts (you said 400 watts right?) You can DL SANDRA lite for free and run the system analizer and advice module to see whats recommended. But I think you may need a more powerful PS. One more thing is cleaning drivers after you uninstall with advice from the Tweakguides.com site (look for the nvidia forceware tweakguide) It lists what programs you can use to clean See ya Girl...

if it is the power supply that came with it I dunno what kind to switch it with. since i just spent 500 bucks upgrading the video card and getting an LCD display I dont want to spend another $100 on a power supply but i noticed a few different brands on NewEgg.com that were around $50-60 bucks and were up to 680w even. so i dunno if that would be good enough? Im going to try that cleaning drivers you talked about and see what happens.

Re: halp meh??!?!
Check this out:
Power Supply Information and Selection I assume you are playing WOW a lot so i could suggest you to buy some gaming PSU... But before you decide to buy new PSU, download Memtest here: http://www.memtest.org/ and test your memory separately... Let Memtest do couple of loops... Also, clean DIMM slots with brush... Report back please... P.S. I bet it is Undead shadow Priest ^^

Re: halp meh??!?!
About your post title-it is a bit vague and really dosent tell the viewers and moderators anything useful about the content of your post. Please use some more helpful information in the title from now on please. As far as the power supply goes I had a problem with my hard drive dissapearing so I wrote a post in the hard drive section here > Hard drive Dissapearing Act...Alakazam!!!
Basically I was told to DL "Sensors View" program to monitor voltages and then post them to Eneles the Mod over there. he was the one that said my hard drive was bad. so I replaced it and problem solved maybe you should DL sensorsview Program. and maybe PM Eneles in hard drive section? I dont know I am just a noob trying to help Sensors view is here > http://www.stvsoft.com/index.php?opt...d=17&Itemid=33 hope it helps :) See YA Girl.

Re: halp meh??!?!
Did the PC work correctly with the 7300Gs in it ?
If the answer is yes and the only change you made was to a more powerful video card You should assume that a more powerful card needs more power to run it. So that leaves us with 2 things either the video card is defective or you don't have enough power to run it. Did you download the latest drivers and install them correctly by uninstalling your old drivers>reboot tappping F8 and selecting VGA mode>disable any anti virus/malware programs and installing the new drivers > reboot?
