Geforce GTX 280: Better than HD 4870?

I am planning to buy the HD 4870 512MB graphics card for my new system. THe price performance ratio seemed much more appealing fromm all the various benchmarking that i went thru over the past week.

Would i still be recommened the GTX 280 as a better card?

I intend to hav a system whihc allows me to play my games at m axed out settings and be a good system to run my video ediitng aps and 3dsmax..

My room mate's PC uses a VisionTek 4870 and does awesome. 12.6K in 3DMark06 and in Crysis with all settings at high it gets about 45FPS average.

the whole hype around the gtx 280 is the new architecture.. so interms of gaming.. the benchmarking doesnt show any major difrnces btween the two.. so how is the cost justified?

is it worth gettin the nvidia card at this point?
