HP Pavillion - GeForce Graphics Card - Help please!

Hiya - would just like to say what a great forum this is before I divulge my problem!

I have a HP Pavillion a.145.uk running on Windows XP. I believe it has an on-board graphics card as I cannot see a separate one. Some time ago the screen suddenly stopped working, we automatically assumed it was the graphics card. We have bought a PNY GeForce graphics card and have put it in to the PC, which doesnt work. Im not very handy when it comes to hardware, etc. I understand that I need to disable the on-board card? If so, I cannot do so because I cant see anything on my screen to do so? It's so frustrating and I dont seem to be getting anywhere, so would be very grateful if somone can offer me some advice please.

Many thanks, Dan :)

Re: HP Pavillion - GeForce Graphics Card - Help please!

What is the model/part number of the video card you bought?
When you turn the PC on do you see any lights, hear any beeps, hear the fans run?

Re: HP Pavillion - GeForce Graphics Card - Help please!

If you have onboard graphics, you must go into bios and uninstall
the onboard video. Then when you boot new hardware will be found.
And then you will have to installdrivers for that new device...Prior to
that you should uninstall drivers for the onboard video, just to be on
the safe side...

The Graphics card is a PNY nVidia GeForce. It says 6200, 128 MB, DDR2, AGPX. If that means anything?

There is nothing on the screen, completely black. There are no beeps when I turn it on and yes the fan inside is running.

Thanks, Dan

Re: HP Pavillion - GeForce Graphics Card - Help please!

Hmm, your monitor is the common denominator in this equation. If your old and new graphics cards don't work, make sure that your monitor itself isn't burned out. Connect the monitor in question to another machine (laptop, desktop, it doesn't matter) and see if it's working.

Alternatively--if you popped in an AGP card, it should default itself as the new video output. If you popped in anything else (PCI, or PCI-E) that is when you would have to disable on-board video yourself in the BIOS. You might have to reset BIOS settings by following these instructions. Then you would disable on-board and then you would connect to monitor to the new video card.

But before you do that, check to see if the monitor isn't the culprit and post the video card model, slot-type, and whether or not you connected a power cable from the PSU to the card.

Re: HP Pavillion - GeForce Graphics Card - Help please!

Does it say 4x or 8x or 4X/8X any where on the box. If there is a part number I can Look it up.

Re: HP Pavillion - GeForce Graphics Card - Help please!

For example if it's this 8X card it won't work in your PC because you have a 4x slot
and would need a 4x/8x card.

This is the part number I think g606200a8e10l-sb. I cant 4X or 8X anywhere on the box.

Also with regards to what was said about the monitor, I have previously connected it to my laptop and it does work on that. It's so frustrating, we gave model numbers of our PC in PC World and they recommended this card!

Thanks so much for your time guys!

Dan :)

Re: HP Pavillion - GeForce Graphics Card - Help please!

Well that is an 8x with 4x slot compatibility card so it should work.

But I would like the look into your original problem a little more onboard graphics don't usually die all of a sudden. Do you have access to a digital volt meter?

Re: HP Pavillion - GeForce Graphics Card - Help please!

Right, so this is the wrong card anyway? I dont have access to a volt-meter, no. It was after moving house, we unpacked it and set it all up and suddenly didnt work anymore. The screen is fine and everything else has always been fine, it's been a fantastic machine with no probs atall. Is there anything else it could be do you think?

Dan :)

Re: HP Pavillion - GeForce Graphics Card - Help please!

Re: HP Pavillion - GeForce Graphics Card - Help please!

No I rewrote that top line I'm thinking faster then I'm typing again.
1st off check the back of the power supply if it has a 120/230v switch make sure it's in the right position for your voltage. then check all the connections to the motherboard and
drives for loose/missing connectors.

My System

Re: HP Pavillion - GeForce Graphics Card - Help please!

If it not displaying a screen that usually just means a hardware conflict , but doesn't really let you know what it is. Do you hear windows starting? As in the drive making alot of noise?

After about 10 or so secconds after you turn it on you'll see the drive activity light flashing and hear the drive clicking away. If it does that then your pc is loading windows and just has a video problem. If not then its not posting which means somthing might have come loose while you were moving and is preventing it from posting such as the ram of cpu or ect...

Re: HP Pavillion - GeForce Graphics Card - Help please!

Here's what the specs say did it come with a Y cable?
Operating Systems Supported Microsoft Windows 2000, XP, Vista
System Requirements Intel Pentium 4 Prescott class processor or higher (LGA775 processor package) or AMD Sempron/Athlon • 128MB RAM • 50MB Hard drive space • CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive • VGA or DVI-I compatible monitor • An AGP4X or higher motherboard compliant • Two hard disk drive power dongles off of separate power supply cable bundles (smaller floppy disk drive connector is not sufficient) • 350W System power supply
I'm looking for a picture of the card

Re: HP Pavillion - GeForce Graphics Card - Help please!

There's no switch to change the voltage, but all the connections and wires all seem fine to me. There's nothing missing or loose from what I can see.

There's a couple of un-used cables inside which are cable-tied, I presume theyre just spares?

Re: HP Pavillion - GeForce Graphics Card - Help please!

Just turned it on again to check to see if it boots normally and its working!! I plugged the screen into the new graphics card and it works? It came with a double-ended black cable which looks like it might fit in the outside of the card - what is this?

Thanks for all the help, much appreciated guys!
