Woah, a 9800 GX2 card lagging? (Help!)
(Minor wall of text ahead, but please, I really need the help, so.. read! <3)
Greetings, everyone. I just did a random search on Google in hope to find some forum where I'd recieve a quick response regarding whatever problem I might have with my computer, and this was one of the first sites I noticed, so.. hopefully, you guys will be able to help me out some here! Alright, so, the problem started yesterday. I had just bought a new graphic card, a 9800 GX2 card, in fact, and had it installed on the spot, along with updates, drivers and everything else, in the store where I bought it. I quickly got back home with my computer (with 4 GB Ram, Due Core @ 2.4 GHz, and the said 9800 GX2 card). The card I had before this card was a 8600 GT, which.. worked rather well for all games, it could run crysis at a okay FPS and all so forth. Now, the first thing I did with this card, seeing it already had been fully updated, had the drivers installed and those things (everything went smoothly so far), was to start my computer up. All the usual applications opened, being Steam, MSN, Aim, Winamp, AVG and some other minor things that my computer requires. I immedietly after this started the game Team Fortress 2, where I increased the graphics to max, seeing I already could run most at "high" with my 8600 GT, max on everything should be easy for a 9800 GX2 card. And all too obviously, it ran smoothly (with full AA/etc on, aswell, including some other minor console commands such as mat_picmip -10 in case someone here'd be familiar with those.) It worked perfectly. Althought it had to "get used" to the map I was playing on each time it loaded a new one. That's rather normal, I'd say. So! The problems didn't start untill I exited TF2, and tried Age of Conan. My 8600 GT could run it at medium without any twitchy graphics, or anything, even if you stood ontop of a cliff and glanced out over the world, the trees, the city, and all that. Now, with this new 9800 GX2 card, I tried the same, but at max graphics. As I feared, it started to lag, and rather extreme such. In fear that my graphic card would overheat and give me a Blue Screen of death, or something, I lowered the graphics to the same settings I had used with my 8600 GT card. And this, is where the problem began for real. The FPS was lower than what it had been with my older, and obviously worse card, than what it was with the 9800 GX2 one. And THIS really annoyed me. I shut Age of Conan down, and instead, I tried to start world of warcraft, which my 8600 GT card could run perfectly smooth, with no problems at all, not even in huge battles at AV, or in the various places of Sunwell. My 9800 GX2 card immedietly turned the cooler up to 100%, and the game lagged like HELL once I had logged into my character. I shut it off, and got really frustrated, and here I am, asking for some advice, or possible help here. ... Anyone know what the problem might be? Any kind of help would be appreciated, I'll provide additional details on my system in case that'd be required. Thanks in advance, Blight |

Re: Woah, a 9800 GX2 card lagging? (Help!)
Thank you both for the response and the welcome. ^^;
I've got a 630W power supply to my computer. Right after I noticed your response, I called the guys I bought the card from, and they claim it should work perfectly well with said power supply, althought, they might be wrong, I've got no idea. So, the problem might be that my card doesn't have enough power to run properly, or something like that? |

you should be able to check voltage by metering for 12 volts across the yellow and black of any molex adapter.If it drops down to 11.5 or 11.7, it's def a bad PSU. it should go below 11.85 or 11.9.

Both? The cat and me?
![]() What brand/model is the PSU? You really need a strong PSU - the lagging is typically caused by a struggling power supply or a bad video driver, lacking game patches. But, in this case I think it's the power. |

Re: Woah, a 9800 GX2 card lagging? (Help!)
I doubt it's game patches or something. WoW worked perfectly well, along with Age of Conan and most other of my games with the 8600 Card.
And.. I've honestly got no idea where to check what brand/model the PSU is. But, yes! It does seem very weird that a graphic card that's more than four times as good as my old one is lagging on games that the previous card ran much better? s: ***Edit*** They fully updated / installed all drivers and so forth for the card, so.. I doubt that's the case, either. ^^; Last edited by Blight; 07-15-2008 at 10:29 AM. |

After examinating it even further, I cannot seem to find any other information aside from a "warranty sticker" of some sort on it, which suggests you not to open to power supply. xP
Bah.. they guys who installed it for me have most likely removed whatever sticker with the information I required - or there was none to begin with. Either ways, I cannot find any further information on it. :/ |

Re: Woah, a 9800 GX2 card lagging? (Help!)
There's 3 stickers on the PSU. One which says 630 Watt Power Supply PFC RoHS. One which is the warranty sticker (which also warns that you shouldn't open the PSU up. xP)..
And the serial number one. If I knew what kind of PSU it was, I would've told eneles when he asked about it, heh. But if it was a CS 630W, would that be something bad? |
