Hi guys im new here and i wonderd if you could give me some advice.
Heres the run down on my system: Windows xp Dual core cpus amd 5000+ 1gig of ddr2 nvidia 6100sm nforce (motherboard) plug n play monitor 400 watt x-power (power supply) Nvidia geforce 8600gt 1gig ddr2 Anyway i have been using my built in gpx card which is a nividia 6100,for online gaming which has been fine apart from rubbish gpx..I went out and got myself a nvidia 8600gt 1gig dd2 card.. Iinstalled it as you usualy would and all seemed fine...Until i tried playing a game..once i try and play any game at all it loads it up for about 1 or 2 mins then shuts my pc off completly.. I have tried every driver out there, i have tried every setting i can think of.. i have disabled the on board gpx.. Is this a sign that i need a another power unit?iI have only had this one for about 2 weeks :( Any ideas why my gpx card is shutting my pc down guys any help or advice would be great im ripping my hair out. Thanks |

Re: Graphics card shuts down my pc?
yes, you are most likely draining your 12 volt rail too much.
pop the case open and put a multimeter between the yellow and any black wire. start gaming, and see how far your voltages drop.

Re: Graphics card shuts down my pc?
Hey mate and welcome to TSf,
check this out:Power Supply Information and Selection you will find out here what is the best for your PC... I think both 300W and 400W are low for your PC... You need more, like 550+ good quality PSU... Hope this will help you mate... |

Re: Graphics card shuts down my pc?
Hi vlad ;)
I changed the gpx card today for another one to see if it was the gpx card causing the issue, and still the same problem.. You think it could be my mobo? this is my mobo.. http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/411 And also is there anythin else i should have changed when swapping from intergrated gpx to my pcie one?I went into bios and changed it to enable if no other external gpu is detected.. This is the only setting it has..And oh..! do i need to adjust the pcie clock at all? Last thing, the card has a 2 pin connector, looks like power or sumthin do i need to have sumthin plugged into that?? Im just looking at other options before i go waste my money on another power unit. :( Last edited by KINJO187; 07-15-2008 at 10:36 AM. |

Re: Graphics card shuts down my pc?
For a safe bet, use OCZ GameXStream 700W. I am using it now. It rocks. You can check out the reviews through the link. If you have budget constraints then maybe you can try Coolermaster. Go for 650W & above.

Re: Graphics card shuts down my pc?
the cpu and video pull over 90% of the power
buy the hi power, but for the sake of 15 pounds you may find yourself putting your hand in your pocket again
