complete system crash on installing the graphics card

hi..when i install my graphics card, while booting i could see white dotted vertical lines on the "WINDOWS XP LOADING"screen..after sometime it crashes and the system asks to be opened in safe mode.
sometimes the system boots in successfully but after a few minutes dotted pink patches appear on the screen and the system crashes.
what is the problem??i am clueless.
graphics card specification- xfx geforce 8500GT 450MHz 256MB DDR2 TV PCI-1
SYSTEM CONFIGURATION- WINDOWS XP SERVICE PACK 2 1GB RAM DDR2 160 GB HARD DISK INTEL(R) CORE(TM)2 CPU 6420@2.13 GHz
no heating problem as there are 3 fans and no overcloking done.

Re: complete system crash on installing the graphics card

What type of graphics card did you have before?
Did you uninstall it in device manager before installing the the new one?
To install the drivers correctly you should
1 uninstall the old drivers
2 boot into vga mode by tapping F8 on boot
3 disable any anti virus/malware programs
4 install the new drivers

You put the card in a year ago or you just installed the card?
