Question Running 9800GX2 along side a 8800GTS

Ive search all over the place and ive also asked Nvidia but they keep giving me the wrong answer..

I would like to know if im able to run my 8800GTS in my PCI-E x8 slot along side my 9800GX2 which is in my PCI-E x16 (Default display)
I have 3 PCI-E slots, 2 are @ x16 for Quad SLI and the other is @ x8 for any other device that uses PCI-E.

I would use the 8800GTS for my GPUFolding but i wasnt to sure if the two cards would run together. And considering the 9800GX2 is an SLI card my M/B might disable the other PCI-E slots.
If this is possible could i have the 9800GX2 in "Multi-GPU" mode and still have a display in the 8800GTS aswell as on my 9800GX2.

I keep asking Nv but they just dont seem to get me, they keep replying that i need another 9800GX2 for physics calculations (QUAD/3-way SLI) which if they read my e-mails they would know i wasnt talking about that.

Thanks guys.

that i know of, no you can't. The drivers for the 8800 and 9800 are likely different and will BSOD you to no end.

PCI-E requires 26 amps at 12 volts. That's a 650W PSU.

You install the drivers to the PCI-E slot it has been placed in.
Because i know for a fact on older machines that had AGP you where able to install an ATI card in the AGP and then a Nvidia card in a PCI slot, Visa versa.

hmm

I tried running a 5200 PCI card (PCI) and my 7800 GT (PCI-E) side by side, i had to do a repair install to get windows to come back to live after BSOD conflicting driver.

Re: Running 9800GX2 along side a 8800GTS

if both cards use the same driver you may luck out better than I did.

Makes me wonder, if i got an SLI mobo..if i could run 4 displays with a 9600 Gt next to my 7800?

PCI-E requires 26 amps at 12 volts. That's a 650W PSU.

I might try it out in a bit, im not looking for performance in the 8800 when using it in a PCI-E x8, i'll mainly use it to watch TV or GPUfolding.
Its just that when you run the 9800GX2 in multi-display mode and have the TV in one monitor while playing a game in the other you loose from 40-150fps. Its crazy.

my 7800 is so comparitively slow, i can put speedfan on the left monitor and game on the primary and FPS don't take a hit. granted left monitor is always connected and rearely used, so i wouldn't know any different.

But going from 475 to 650 MHZ core would make a difference i'm sure...with a 800 MHz memory bump.

I could get a 2 PCIe motherboard, and run the 9600 and 7800 together for 4 monitors liek you're wanting, let the 9600 run free and put 2 screens on the 78 plus vivo...but it would hate me lol.

Re: Running 9800GX2 along side a 8800GTS

Unfortunately the 9800GX2 is 2 cards in one. It has two GPU's, two lots of memory ect..
If i have it in multi-display mode and OC one card the drivers crap out. They both need to have the same core/shader/memory speed even if they are not in SLI. I think its because they share the same PCI-E slot. or the drivers are just crap..
