"vtdisp display driver has stopped working normally" when I play "Combat Arms"

Hi. Whenever I start up "Combat Arms" I can log in fine, Join a game Fine, and even play for a while. After about 10-15 minutes of play time... The game freezes... Completly. And I cant even ALT-TAB it either. There was only 1 time where I Alt-tabbed it... and it said "vtdisp display driver has stopped working normally" and the screen turns to about 3-bit pixels.. and I have to restart it to restore it to its colour.
It only happens when Im playing Combat Arms and Nothing else.
I have did a system restore twice, Downloaded multiple different display drivers and still doesnt work.
My display adapter is: VIA/S3G Unichrome Pro IGP and I tried to download different types of drivers for it.
Im using an Acer T135
My chipset model is: VIA K8T800 PRO
I really dont know what to do anymore.
Someone please help.

Hi LaNNo and welcome to TSF !

Acer Aspire T135 support page

Please only use the drivers from Acer's website.

Could be an overheating issue. Open the computer case and check that there's no dust on the fans and heatsinks. Download and install speedfan and tell us what temps, fan speeds and voltages it reports.

Have you uninstalled all the video drivers and programs, restarted the computer and reinstalled the proper drivers (S3) for your model from Acer's website ?

There are errors in speedfan's readings (the cpu temp is usually temp2 but there's no way that it's only 25°C), probably because it doesn't know the proper sensor layout for your motherboard or because your motherboard lacks those sensors (remember that Acer means cheap). Enter the BIOS at startup (repeatedly press del or look for some "press xx to enter setup" message) and see if there's some hardware monitor or pc health status screen there with your temps and voltages.

If there are no graphic glitches in your game before it hangs, if all other programs and games work fine and if the problem always happen after some time in the game the symptoms fit with an overheating GPU or power issues (an underpowered PSU could also overheat after some time). Combat Arm might use your hardware more intensively that other games.

Have you opened the computer case to clean the dust ? If it's overheating leaving the case opened may help. You may also try to direct a small fan toward the integrated video chipset but try to avoid blowing air directly on another fan (the CPU fan for instance) since this could damage that other fan.

I'll move you to the video card support section.

I dont know what you mean by that, and how do you delete drivers??
And no other game does say that except for Combat Arms..

Re: "vtdisp display driver has stopped working normally" when I play "Combat Arms"

as I said look for some "press xx to enter setup" message at startup, should be F1 or F2. This will enter the BIOS which is an utility that allows to set some hardware settings before windows starts. But since this is an Acer I doubt there will be a screen with your temps and voltages.

Go to add/remove programs (in the control panel) and uninstall everything related to your video or display device. Then go to start => run and type devmgmt.msc. Expand display adapters, right-click your video card and click uninstall. Then restart the computer and install the S3 drivers from Acer's website. As I said, with your symptoms, I doubt the problem lies with the drivers.

The rest is summed up in my previous post. You could try another power supply or a dedicated video card if you can get your hands on one. A dedicated video card will need a bigger PSU anyway so make sure you know what power it'll require.

If the computer is still under warranty check with Acer support.

edit : if the crash always happens at the exact same scene within the game it could be a bug in the game itself. Check the game publisher's website for release notes and patches. If it happens at different scenes but after a given time then it's probably the video chipset overheating.

Browse to c:\windows\minidump. Are there any .dmp files there ? If so zip them together and attach the .zip file to your next post (click on post reply or go advanced to see the "manage attachments" button).

Go to start => run, type eventvwr.msc and check the different sections of the event viewer. Any error message happening at the time of the crashes ? If so double-click the error, click the third button on the right (this copies the complete error message in the memory) then right-click => paste it here.

it's not just combat arms, it happens with battlefield 1942 on dell optiplexs, and lemming ball z on a home made machine...

If it happens with several games then a BSOD involving the display driver is either a driver issue or a hardware issue. Uninstall the current video driver and reinstall the latest one for your video card. Install all the latest updates from Windows update. Run dxdiag and check that the directDraw and direct3D tests work properly. Clean the dust in the case. Check the temps and voltages in the BIOS.

If there are other error messages or BSOD's that are not related to the display driver then check the ram and hard drive as well.
