Graphics card compatible?

Hey there!

I am currently running an ATI Radeon X1900XTX PCI-E x16 512MB card, but due to problems (artifacts and games crashing) that seem to be getting worse no matter what I do (cleaning it out, trying multiple versions of drivers) I've decided that it's just broken and am going to upgrade.

My concern is that my motherboard may not be compatible with the newer cards.
It's a: (Socket AM2)MSI K9N SLI-2F nForce 570 SLI MCP Chipset DDR2/800 SATA-II RAID MBoard w/ Dual 16x PCI-Express

and the kind of cards I'm looking at (for around £100) are the GeForce 8800GT and the GeForce 9600GT. Now these cards are both PCI-E 2.0 and the motherboard is just PCI-E. I've heard these are backwards compatible, but that there are also problems with certain cards.

Do you think these would work ok? Are there any other problems I might not have forseen? Might I be better off getting a different card? Any help would be appreciated!

Re: Graphics card compatible?

Welcome to TSF.

I use that Motherboard too and im running an 8800GT with no problems.

Either the 8800GT or the 9600GT will work.

Re: Graphics card compatible?

Ah excellent, thanks

When I was reading up on PCI-E 2.0 it was going on about how it was twice as fast as PCI-E 1.0 (or was it 1.1 was the most common version?), so I was just wondering; if I were to use a PCI-E 2.0 graphics card with a PCI-E 2.0 motherboard instead of the one I have would I get more out of it, or does it not really mean anything?
