XP Issue: NVIDIA Crash?

I have just recently reformatted my computer. After reinstalling the driver that came with the Resource CD, I then updated to SP3 (I run a Dell Dimension 4600 [yeah, old] and have a nVidia GeForce [FX?] 5200) so after I update to SP3, I decide to update the drivers on the graphics card. Now after I did, my computer gets past the splash screen, and goes pitch black. The only way to fix it is to run in safe mode, roll back the driver, disable it, then enable it in normal mode. But because I cannot update the drivers, I cannot play some of my favorite games, like I used to before the reformat, like HL2 and MapleStory. For some reason, the drivers I updated to and used worked before the reformat won't work now. Any help? Much obliged, and much appreciated.

i had a problem like that but on an asus after i put sp3 on it i had issues with alot of games. i format again and skipped sp3 and took all updates other than sp3 and all is fine again

does anyone know anything that doesn't involve reformatting?

in the device manager uninstall the card
reboot tapping f8 and choose vga mode
when windows finishes rebooting
disable a/virus
install your drivers
reboot the computer
