X1950 Overheating problem
About a month ago a decided to buy Race Driver GRID, I started playing it on my PC and after about 30mins my PC began to beep, when I closed the game down there was a message saying my graphics card was overheating and so the clock speed was turned down. I ran the game again, this time with the lowest graphics (making it look really bad) and it did the same thing, I cleaned my PC of dust and still it did the same thing, I even updated the drivers without any luck, I've never had this problem before having played games such as Crysis on high settings perfectly fine, so I decided it must be the game and I un-installed it. Since then I had been playing games like PES 2008 and Oblivion without any problems, today I bought Two Worlds and the problem has returned, after about 30mins of play the computer beeps from inside the case, the screen flickers and I get the same message pop up.
It doesn't effect game play (doesn't slow it down), but the beeping and flicking screen are annoying, and I'm worried about damaging my graphics card. I've got an ATI Radeon X1950 Pro, Intel Core 2 DUO CPU and 2 gigs of ram, and I'm running XP Pro. What can I do? Last edited by lee182; 06-24-2008 at 12:34 PM. |

Re: X1950 Overheating problem
Take the side off the case boot the PC and check that the fan on the video card is
1) Spinning 2) Is it making any funny noises 3) The ducts around the look clean (Check after turning off the PC) |

Re: X1950 Overheating problem
I did as you said and the fan is spinning fine, it isn't making any noises, in fact it's running almost silently and the whole graphics card is clean from any dust.
I'm not sure, but I don't think it's the graphics card itself as I can play games like The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion on full graphics just fine, and then when I play Two Worlds it causes it to overheat, maybe it's a driver or software problem? (I have updated to the latest drivers). |

Re: X1950 Overheating problem
Did the problem start after you installed the latest drivers?
If so maybe roll them back to the previous driver and see if it still does it. Also does CCC allow you monitor the gpu temp? If not try using PC Wizard in the background and when you encounter the problem switch to using Alt-Tab and view the temps. |

Re: X1950 Overheating problem
I rolled back the drivers and the problem is still there.
I've felt the graphics card after this problem happens and it is really hot, but then doesn't explain why I can play games like Oblivion and Crysis and Call of Duty 4 and more on full or very high graphics settings fine, and I can't play GRID or Two Worlds on even low settings without the card overheating. And another thing is even though it's telling me it's overheating the game is running perfectly fine, at least 40 fps or probably a lot more! |

Re: X1950 Overheating problem
It seems I may have fixed the problem.
I took the graphics card out and gave it a proper dusting, I blew in to all the holes and vents and a little bit of dust came from under the chip itself, it didn't seem like that much dust was removed but when it put it back in my PC and tried the game it ran fine without the usual overheating message. Of course I may not have fixed it completely, I may be playing a game some when in the future and the problem may return, but for now it seems to be fixed. |
