9800 GX2 too big?
Recently, i bought a gaming computer and had my cousin put it together, but i was just wondering why the EVGA 9800 GX2 graphics card is slanted inside the tower. it's kind of at an angle and when i look at the back port, as it goes farther to the right, space starts to open up. I was just wondering if this messes up the conductivity to the motherboard or not. Thanks in advance for your help.

Re: 9800 GX2 too big?
My guess is that either its not seated correctly in the slot or the motherboard does not lineup correctly with the case. Does the computer have any problems?

Re: 9800 GX2 too big?
To be honest with you, the computer runs great, heavy duty games are running at smooth 60s. I was simply wondering if this could mess it up in the long run. Oh, and by the way, I believe the case is the correct size for the board, I went with my cousin to buy the parts at a wholesaler and he was the one who reccomended the case.

here's the best quality i can get (webcam) sorry if it's not enough, but I hope it, at the very least, gives you enough information to decipher.

Re: 9800 GX2 too big?
I cant tell, is it screwed in? If it is then you should be fine as long as things are running smoothly. If your video starts getting screwy (pun intended) I'd reseat it. If it's not screwed in thats just endangering your card!
Make sure you lay the case down on its side and let gravity help with the placement if you decide to reseat it, this looks similar to a card I once installed in my early years while the case was standing up straight. These cards are big and do weigh a lot, with so much money on the line I wouldn't risk it! |

Re: 9800 GX2 too big?
As Brocktree said the card should have a screw holding it in and it should be straight and not slanted, the contacts on the card will not make full contact if the card is out at this end.
Can you borrow a camera and provide clearer shots, particularly where it inserts into the slot?

Re: 9800 GX2 too big?
It looks like a "tool-free" case. if there are screw holes available it's best to use those rather than the friction holds. Friction holds work fine for smaller cards but that GX2 is far too heavy.

Re: 9800 GX2 too big?
I do not have access to a good camera any time soon so unfortunately this is all i can give you. To lay to rest the question of the screw, this case came with a "no tools" card installation system which is why you see those white tabs holding the card into the bay.

Re: 9800 GX2 too big?
BUUUUUT to add to the problem of the integrity of these little white tabs, they don't seem to be doing a whole lot in respect to actually holding this mammoth up to the board.
It's horribly slanted and unfortunately, no matter how hard i try to push it up (gently), there doesn't seem to be any positioning that would allow me to screw it in. Last edited by penguoctopus; 06-24-2008 at 04:48 PM. |

Re: 9800 GX2 too big?
It looks like the card is leaning away from the case at end opposite end from the motherboard almost like the motherboard is on an angle in the case higher in the back then the front.

Re: 9800 GX2 too big?
Marginally good news! I put my computer on the floor and worked on it for about 10 minutes and by repositioning the card I was able to actually screw it in so at this point, it's pretty damn straight so until i can get my cousin to take me to the shop. I'll wait it out with this setup. However, I'd like to thank you all for your help and suggestions and especially Brocktree who suggested re-seating it on the board.
