PowerColor ATI HD 2600XT crashes

Hi!

I recently bought a 'new' computer from a friend. It's based on the ASUS T2-PE1 barebone. I formatted it(naturally) and installed all the drivers I found from ASUS' site and AMD's/ATI's site for the GFX card. It worked, for a while. Then it began locking up and crashing. When I had the latest Catalyst drivers it complained that 'the VPU has recovered from a serious error' etc. I've tried some older drivers and two sets of Omegas. Nothing's worked. It doesn't crash ingame(CoD4, TF2, Assassin's Creed for example), it's crashed only once during gameplay. Usually it crashes when I'm surfing the web or using mIRC. And it's completely random. The crashes themselves are weird. The screen goes all pixelated and broken and then the monitor acts as if the computer's turned off and the power light turns orange. I reboot the computer and there aint any errors to see.

I'm running now on the integrated mobo GFX card, but it's absolute **** and I can't play any games on it so it would be nice to know if this problem is fixable or should I get a new card.

Also, the card isn't overheating. The temperatures are a steady 40-45 celsius.

Please, help.

Re: PowerColor ATI HD 2600XT crashes

PowerColor ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT
Currently using Catalyst 07.8 with 8.401 drivers from ATI
Pentium 4 3,4GHz
1,5Gb of RAM (DDR)
ASUS P5R4T/DP (in ASUS T2-PE1 barebone)
All that's on the PSU is ASUS and 250W
With the Catalyst drivers it gives the "VPU Recover has reset your graphics accelerator or it was no longer responding to graphics driver commands" error
All temperatures are in check(40-50 celsius)
Voltages are within the recommended(atleast some recommend) 5% margin

Dunno if this'll help/is relevant at all, but I had the tower tipped over on its side for some reason(can't remember why) and I happened to touch the bottom with my hand during a session of CoD4, the bottom of the case was hot as hell! When I touched the GFX cards heatsink and the card itself, they weren't hot at all.

Edit #2: Dunno if this'll help either but I snapped a picture to show the troublesome positioning of the card in the mATX case

Re: PowerColor ATI HD 2600XT crashes

I dunno if it's a normal size.. When I measured it the dimension were 12cm long x 12cm wide x 8cm deep

As said, it's a barebone mATX case.

Would the problem be fixed with an ATX case and a power supply? Cus I hear mATX mobos can be installed on ATX cases. One problem though is that I tested installing it on an ATX case yesterday and it didn't fit... The ATX case was a store bought Fujitsu-Siemens though.. Then again, I might've "mis-installed" it, I'm not much of a computer wiz

Re: PowerColor ATI HD 2600XT crashes

I had an ATI RADEON X1600 and I had only a 350W PSU. This what apparently not enough as i kept recieving the VPU has recovered from a serious just like you. Also my screen would go blank as if the adapter had been unplugged. In my new computer i have an ATI HD 2600 with a 550W PSU and it runs smooth. I would upgrade if you only have a 250W PSU.

Re: PowerColor ATI HD 2600XT crashes

Bah. Apparently upgrading would mean I'd just have to get a new computer. This barebone mobo can't be fitted to ATX cases and this mATX case has some weird PSU.. :/

Oh well, guess I'll just buy a third computer then :D

On a more happier note, hasn't given the VPU error even once today. I've been watching DVD's with it, playin games, surfing the web. Nothing. Fingers crossed. :P

Well, this mATX didn't. It might've been the odd shaping of the mobo or the case, but they just wouldn't go together. When the screws fit, sockets on the back were waaaaay off.

Re: PowerColor ATI HD 2600XT crashes

usually there are multiple holes in the backing plate and you screw the standoffs into the appropiate ones

Yup. The sockets went way past the plate, so that didn't really matter.

Re: PowerColor ATI HD 2600XT crashes

Thats really strange I wonder if it's a non standard board to fit their barebones case?
does that barebones case have other screw holes that would allow you to upgrade the motherboard?

Exactly what my friends told me. Apparently it's more than likely that the board's not standard and built to fit just this particular case.
No extra screw holes on the case.

Nice to know, so nobody will pick that case up used somewhere and try to make something out of it.

Say, would underclocking the card help?
