Simple Problem - Upgrading Graphics card but dont know what to get!

Ok i have a very simple problem - I want to upgrade my graphics card so it can handle better games then what i play at the moment (All i play is **** like CS, WoW).

My simple question is -
Will this graphics card support Crysis - Forget about the rest of my system, i just need to know if this will run Crysis

Re: Simple Problem - Upgrading Graphics card but dont know what to get!

Sorry, but we can not forget about the rest of the system.
You have to have a PSU, MoBo, RAM, OS, etc. etc. to see if this graphics card will really work in "your system". You can go out and buy the best video card, but "your system" has to support it.

Re: Simple Problem - Upgrading Graphics card but dont know what to get!

Ok well i have an AGP8x slot on my mobo, so....yea. Ive got a usicase 400W PSU, 2gb ram, and im running windows XP sp1 At the moment (I just cant seem to get SP2 to work on my comp - I installed it then everything just sorta died on me, couldn't even turned on my computer, so i got into safe mode and system restored it back to SP1)

From the time i made the original post to now, i've sort of changed my mind about how im going to go about this. Buying an AGP graphics card is kind of a dumb idea considering PCI-E is all the rage at the moment, and isnt too expensive...BUT, i have a "PCI-E16x" slot on my comp, but in the nice little NON EXISTANT fine print, gigabyte forgot to mention that its capped at running at a pci-e 4x bandwidth, so PCI E is kinda screwed for me - Thats why im thinking about a whole system upgrade....Which brings me to my next problem:
I really dont have the money to do a full upgrade - Honestly i dont have any money AT ALL. I was getting $150 for my birthday and planned on getting the new gfx card with that - AND im getting a 22" LCD for my bday...So, they kind of go together nicely lol. But i dont want to waste my $150 on some AGP heap of crap when it will just be obsolete within a few months time.

AGP is gonna die out and im gonna be stuck with some useless heap of junk (Which is where my computer is heading) My comp cost me $1200 to build about 2 years ago...now its worth like $200...(as always) So....yea, im kinda boned on this lol.

I think a nice cheap pci-e card would go nice BUT then i need a new Mobo, which would mean a new CPU, which would mean new RAM, which would just **** me over lol.

Re: Simple Problem - Upgrading Graphics card but dont know what to get!

I know what you mean.
Under My system specs you can see what I have. My build ran about $700.00 at the time and now I could propably duplicate it for under $500.00. The good thing is as technology changes the price seems to go down for what you get. I paid about $144.00 for my MoBo at the time an now it is about $85.00. In your case you could keep your CPU and change out the MoBo for about $120.00. Although I would up the PSU to atleast 550W. Here is just some things I found that you may wish to consider if you wish to keep your CPU:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131142
Not the best in the world, but not bad either
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817153029
Nice PSU for the price
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814150268
I have the same card. At the time of my build it cost me over $125.00. At this price I may buy another one.
A 512MB here:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814150247
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145034
If you need to replace your memory

As far as your choice of video card I think you would need an ATI 2900 series. Here are the specs (at the bottom):
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crysis

This was just a quick search, but the point I am trying to make is your new build will not cost you as much as before ($1200.00). You can propably get away with something different for under $400.00.

Good Luck
Bill

Lol ok, if you insist. I was checking out prices on building a quad core... For a decent Mobo, 4gb ram, and a Q6600 2.4ghz cpu for only $440 :D Sounds like a ******* decent upgrade to me :D

Re: Simple Problem - Upgrading Graphics card but dont know what to get!

No video card with that, all it is is basically an upgrade kit - Motherboard, Cpu, and ram. Ill edit this post in like 5 minutes after i check around for all the links etc, got em all saved somewhere lol.

EDIT: Mmmk, heres all the links etc. The one problem with all this is that its all being brought from different companies so the shipping prices would be outragous, but im sure you can find a local supplyer around your area with some decents prices.

ASUS P5N-E SLI Mobo (Yes thats right, sli mobo :D) $99 http://www.ccpu.com.au/show_prod.php...od_id=p5n-esli

Kingston DDR2 2GB PC-6400/800 CL5 Value Ram $55EA ($110)
http://www.centrecom.com.au/catalog/...ducts_id=30357

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 CPU ($218)
http://www.megaware.com.au/index.php...ducts_id=72551

There we have it :D That comes to $427 AUD minus the shipping costs. I'd probably set aside (for australians) about an extra $50 for posting all that. So we have a grand total of $477 for a beasty machine imo.

Also, another good deal i found was this graphics card -
Galaxy GF 8600GT PCI-E 1GB
http://www.ozdirect.com.au/product_i...ducts_id=52885
And best of all, that card is SLI compatible, and so is the motherboard. So buy yourself 2 of them and your set :D

Cheers

PS: REMEMBER, all those prices are in AUD!

Re: Simple Problem - Upgrading Graphics card but dont know what to get!

Hi,
Thanks for the info.
I think I would use different memory though. Kingston is not one of my most popular brands. Take a look at this:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...e=2GB+(2+x+1GB)
Or if you want 4GB:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...e=4GB+(2+x+2GB)

I do not know if they ship to AU though and am not sure of the money conversion.
Thanks,
Bill
