Can't quite put my finger on this one..
Hi there, I'm new so not sure if I'm posting this in the correct place...
Ok well I guess I'll start by listing my pc spec as follows: AMD Athlon 64 FX-60 Dual Core 2.61 GHz 2GB Ram GPU's Radeon X1900 Crossfire mode. Audio Device is on board Realtek High Definition Audio. Onto the problem, basically I built this system over a year ago now and quite recently I have been getting problems with any game I'm playing freezing then an infinite sound loop error and the system just totally locks up. I've updated my graphics Drivers and my sound drivers also I've done a memcheck and the Ram checks out ok, my CPU is running at a good temperature but my GPU's are recording temps of around 88c is this a problem? I figured its either the GPU's overheating, the onboard sound being basically naff or my PSU is faulty, it is rated at 650W but it was reasonably cheap and the fan inside the PSU unit has made a subtle squeaking noise from day one (like crickets in a box). Not really sure which of these is the problem and I'm not going to replace every component as it would cost too much, is there any advice you can give me? Any software I can download to pinpoint the problem - any help will be appreciated, cheers guys. J |

Re: Can't quite put my finger on this one..
Welcome to tsf. If the psu was one of those crappy 30$ ones then thats probably your problem. Junky psu's give bad incionsistant power and can cause components to even fry. You should definitely replace it if it is a cheapo one.
For that setup you'll need a 500w or higher with 18a on the 12v rail (for agp) or 26a on the 12v rail (for pci-e). Also , clean out the dust inside the pc case and make sure the gpu fan is spinning.

Re: Can't quite put my finger on this one..
ok so I have another little problem it seems my new psu only has a 4 pin cpu power connector but my mobo has an 8 pin socket, will this be a problem putting the 4 pin into the 8 pin slot?

Re: Can't quite put my finger on this one..
Ok I've requested to return the item so until I get a refund I'll just have to stick with my old psu. I'll be more careful this time, I guess I rushed my decision a little without consulting my motherboard specifications properly. Thanks again.
