[SOLVED] Multiple video cards and code 10 in device manager
Ok I have this problem. I am trying to use multiple monitors by using multiple video cards in my computer but I have a problem!
The original video card is Matrox MGA Millenium The second one (that I have just added) is ATI XPERT98 aka RAGE XL PCI well the second one is not working! it will work by its self, but it will not work with the other one! I only get this code 10 the device cannot start, in device manager! the drivers installed fine but it will not start! does anyone know what I can do about this? Both video cards are PCI video cards and the computer does not support AGP video, only PCI or ISA as this is an older computer The BIOS version is AMIBIOS 1.00.10.BR0T the computer is a Gateway P5-133XL with Intel Pentium As I have said, the driver installed fine, but the device cannot start for some reason and I cannot figure that out! If anybody knows what I can do about this I would really appreciate it! Last edited by txe5502; 05-13-2008 at 12:23 AM. |

Re: Multiple video cards and code 10 in device manager
A pentium 1? A motherboard that old will not have enough resources to run two pci video cards. Or the cards are not dual monitor capable , meaning they won't work together if there is no primary video such as an agp slot video card , or if you are using windows 9x and dual monitor drivers were never made.
I have an old pentium 2 that I have just for fun. And it does the same when I have two pci video cards in it. But if I use 1 pci and 1 agp card then they will work fine together.

Re: Multiple video cards and code 10 in device manager
Well this computer is not running Win9x instead it is running WindowsXP Professional SP2 and it does not have any AGP slots, I dont think that existed in 1995 when this was built, but it certainly isnt a resource problem whatever it is because Device Manager says "This device is not trying to use any resources because it has a problem"
I can tell you that I DO have a resource problem between my SuperDisk drive and my parallel port (most likely because the drive is connected on this port) but I think that is probably unrelated because as I said this device isnt using any resources right now. I cannot even access the Resources page because it will not even start the driver so its not a resource conflict, do you know what else could be causing this? |

Re: Multiple video cards and code 10 in device manager
Not really , I do know that on all the computers I've had I've never gotten one working with 2 pci video cards , if you do find out how to do it let me know. Most of the time it has to do with the cards being to old to support multiple cards on one system. Somthing like they do not interact with each other.

Re: Multiple video cards and code 10 in device manager
Well I finally figured it out!!! All it took was switching the video cards in the PCI slots and that did the trick!!! I put the Matrox Millenium MGA PCI card in the slot that the ATI XPERT98 PCI card had been in and also I did the same with the ATI XPERT98 PCI card and that put the Matrox (original) card as secondary and the ATI card as primary, and now it works fine! I got dual monitors! However the top monitor (the one on the Matrox card) is not supporting any Hardware Accelerators, but that is ok because this card is so old and it never has supported that, these accelerators didnt exist in min 1995, but luckily for me, the ATI card supports it so that should make this machine finally capable of viewing flash player with no problem!!!
Who says the old AT / SIMM / Socket 5+7 / ISA machines are dead? I definately dont think so, especially after finding out it can handle dual video cards (I must say even I was actually surprised that it could do this)! It might not be a speed demon, but at least it gets the job done! I hope this is helpful for anyone else with the same problem! p.s. this machine is not by any means my primary system, I use my dual core laptop for that, this machine is just the one with all the hard drives for my storage needs and also it is the one that I use for backup if anything should happen with my other better ones (and currently thats the case) Last edited by txe5502; 05-14-2008 at 10:32 PM. |
