I have been having a problem with video crashes, something similar to Bounky37's problem, but not exactly. I didn't want to hijack his thread so I started a new one. My computer crashes and restarts for "Medal of Honor, Pacific Assault" and "The Elder Scrolls - Oblivion" but not for "The Elder Scrolls - Morrowind." It does not crash when playing DVDs or when running Pinnacle's Studio 11 video editing program. As with Bounky37, I have viewed the hidden devices on my computer and see 5 with yellow exclamation marks, 4 of them relating to my ATI Radeon All-In-Wonder video card. I'm not sure what the other driver is related to. In my event viewer, I see about 20 red Xs for the 5/3 (the date and time of my most recent crash), about half of which give the source as ati2mtag and the other half as "Service Control Manager." Where do I go from here?

We prefer to keep one thread per user so you did right to create your own.

What are your complete system specs ? If this is some brand computer then give us the brand and model, else see the posting system specs link in my sig.

Have you tried to uninstall then reinstall the ati drivers and catalyst control center ? You'll find the latest version of the drivers on the video card's manufacturer website or on nvidia's website.

Enter the BIOS at startup (repeatedly press del or look for some message telling you to "press xx to enter setup") and look for some hardware monitor or pc health status screen. Report your temps, fan speeds and voltages from there.

If this is a desktop computer then open the computer case and check that there's no dust on the fans and heatsinks. If there's dust clean it with a can of compressed air. Check that all the fans are spinning when you turn the computer on (cpu fan, power supply fan and video card fan).

Thanks for the prompt attention! There was so much in JustPassing's note that I haven't gotten to it all yet.

First of all, it's not a brand, it's a home built. I had a job at a computer shop just long enough to learn how to build 'em, but they went out of business before I learned how to thoroughly troubleshoot them.

Power Supply – I'll have to open it up to find out, and I'm putting it off as long as possible.

Motherboard – Asus A7N8X, Socket A

CPU – Athlon 3000+, Socket A, 2.1 GHz

RAM – Nanya DDR SDRAM, PC3200 (200 MHz), 1 Gb

Video Card(s) – ATI Radion All-in-Wonder 9600 XT, AGP, 128 Mb

Hard Drive(s) – Seagate IDE 300 Gb
Maxtor IDE 60 Gb

Operating System - Windows XP Pro SP2

I can give you the readings from the BIOS, but I have the AsusProbe PC utility. It has the CPU temp at 39 C, the MB temp at 29 C, the CPU fan at 3970, 12V at 12.2, 5V at 4.8, 3.3V at 3.2, and VCore at 1.68

I had the box apart about a month ago and everything seemed pretty clean.

By the way, I also have an internal wireless modem and Creative SB X-FI sound card installed. I just updated my video drivers about 2 months ago, but I'll check that out again.

Uninstall everything related to ATI or Catalyst, restart the computer in safe mode (repatedly press F8) and reinstall the latest drivers from Ati (download them before you restart in safe mode, you won't be able to surf the internet while in safe mode).

If there are still errors in the device manager double-click the device and tell us what's written under device status. If there are unknown devices follow dai's advice and use the unknown device identifier.

You'll need to open your computer case to make sure all the fans, including the video card fan, are spinning and tell us more about your power supply. Your 5V and 3V lines are low, see what the BIOS says about them since it's often more accurate than software readings. The power supply may be failing or insufficient for your rig, see if you can test the computer with another good quality 350-400W+ power supply.

Sorry it has taken me so long to get back.

I can give you the readings from the BIOS. It has the CPU temp at 45 C, the MB temp at 28 C, the CPU fan at 3750, 12V at 12.35, 5V at 4.75, 3.3V at 3.2, and VCore at 1.68

The power supply is an Atlas 350 W. I completely blew out the dust in the case, but there wasn't much.

I uninstalled the ATI drivers and reinstalled the video drivers from the ATI web site. I did not reinstall the Multimedia package because I thought I would see if they might be causing trouble. But no luck. When I start Medal of Honor, it loads up to the point where it gets to the opening menu and then crashes and restarts the computer.

The Hidden Devices in the device manager are still marked with an exclamation mark. They are:
ATI WDM Specialized MVD Codec
ATI WDM Specialized PCD Codec
ATI WDM TV Audio Crossbar
ATI WDM TV Tuner
WinRT Toolkit Generic Driver

+5V line is underpowered and +3.3 and +12V lines not optimal either. Try another power supply, 400W+ and stick with good brands like Antec, Corsair or Seasonic.
