Complete display freeze (not the computer)

I have a strange problem and hoping someone here might have a suggestion or solution.

My display will completely freeze at random intervals. When this happens, I cannot get the display back. It is not in the OS (so, not sure if this is the correct place to be asking this) as it will happen even in the POST. The computer still runs properly. If the display freezes during the post, I can wait a little bit and all of the peripherals will initialize. I can then press the power button and the computer will go through the shutdown process and the turn itself off. But I cannot see any of this.

I have replaced the video card, swapped monitors, swapped monitor cables, used DVI and VGA connections and still get the same thing happening.

System is as follows:
MSI K8N NEO 4 Platnium
AMD Athlon 64 3500+
2GB (512 x 4) Corsair PC2700
2 500GB WD SATA HD
Gigabyte GeForce 6600 128MB (original)
eVGA GeForce 7600GS 512MB (replacement)
Allied 500W PSU
MSI 52x32x52x CDRW
LiteOn Multirecorder (CDRW/DVD)

Any takers? :)

Re: Complete display freeze (not the computer)

You could try out another PSU.

Re: Complete display freeze (not the computer)

I suggest look into driver, psu since you mentioned random intervals. Seem hardware problems.

Re: Complete display freeze (not the computer)

Hmmm...well, I don't think the PSU could be at fault as the only thing that is affected is the video display. As I stated before, the computer itself continues to seemingly operate normally. I can try that out, though. Never hurts to try.

I also don't believe that it would be a driver problem since this will happen during POST. There are not any drivers loaded at that point. I will look into the PSU and see if that changes anything.

Thank you for the quick responses. I'll let you know very shortly.
