Re: will 8800gt work

450W is cutting it a bit fine, but yes it should work if you're not running too many hard drives. I'd recommend 550W for the 8800GT.

Secondly, no it's not true, the 8800GT blows the 8600GTS out of the water.

Underclocker is right: 8800GT is better than 8600GT, but I would recommend you to buy 550W PSU if you can because better now than to re-buy it again when you try to input more components in your PC.
Maybe it wont handle it...

Re: will 8800gt work

Definitely go for a higher powered psu. Trying to run an 8800gt on a 450w, even a good quality one, is just asking for trouble.

Re: will 8800gt work

The bare minimum for that card if I were building this rig would be a quality 650 watt power supply.

However, with the links dai gave you, it would be prudent to go for the 750 supplies that are on sale. That Corsair is basically a steal IMHO and would be my first choice. That would enable you to future proof your power supply needs for the immediate future and be cost efficient in the long run.

Re: will 8800gt work

I'm also planning to buy a 8800GT and would like to ask if my current PSU, an Enermax 535W, can handle it.

My PC specs is as follows:
AMD Athlon64 x2 3600+
2 x 1GB Geil DDR2 800
1 x 160GB Seagate Barracuda SATA
2 x 250GB Seagate Barracuda SATA
Liteon Super All-write DVD writer

Re: will 8800gt work

That would be a very close call liguid angel. While it might run it or there is a chance it might be able to (enermax is an O.K. supply, but certainly not a Corsair or a Seasonic), but with that card, it would have all it could handle. Therefore, I would not feel right recommending something so close to the line on performance as a power supply. That is my opinion.

Re: will 8800gt work

I'm always amazed at the supposed PSU requirements that people push when upgrading video cards. The video card is only one device and the overall hardware list and requirements should dictate the PSU required to power the system. It is correct to advise for a more powerful PSU, but it is not always necessary. For example the system being used right now by myself includes two DVD burners, two 360gb HDs, media card readers, a fairly powerful CPU (see my signature) and a BFG 8800 GT OC 512mb video card. All of this is running perfectly powered from a Cooler Master Extreme 500 watt PSU. That is not really all that surprising, but before I purchased that Cooler Master PSU, the whole system also ran quite happily on the stock 350 watt HP PSU that the system came equipped with.

Re: will 8800gt work

your video card and cpu demand can be 90% of the power required, they run all the time
the only time everything cuts in is on boot
max. power consumption (QX6800 - 130 watts, QX6700 - 130 W, Q6600 - 95 W

Re: will 8800gt work

Does it damage your CP to be running a limited Power supply? I have a Nvidia 8800GT thats running in my box... only a 300W PSU >.< ( I dont use the computer at the moment, for fear I might fry out something )

Re: will 8800gt work

It can damage most anything in your rig. Memory is one that gets damaged very easily when you have an underpowered power supply. It can fry the board, the video card, just about anything.

Re: will 8800gt work

Would converting one of my hard drives to an external one that uses its own power cut back on the power consumption and therefore run the 8800GT? I'm planning on buying the 8800gt right now but will hold off on the installation if I need a more powerful PSU.

Re: will 8800gt work

I don't think hard disks use enough power to make up the difference. You might be fine, but then again, you might not. I wouldn't risk it. Besides, if you get a high quality psu, you'll probably have it for future builds: they last quite a while.
