9800 gx2 174.74 drivers suck..should I try omega?
I know it's a brand new card but this driver set has to be the worst i've seen from nvidia in a long time. Most of my games have some sort of artifacts, the custom profiles don't work for individual games, the frame rates aren't as good as they should be, there's stuttering/jerking in most games, and really old games look like they're in 8-bit color mode....
The card is not overheating nor is it defective if that's what you're thinking....so it's not THAT bad, just annoying. So I was thinking of trying the nvidia version of the omega drivers, except I don't know if they are any better or not....and I don't want to hassle with it if they aren't. Anyone using the omega drivers with this series who can confirm this?

Your PSU is underpowered, it has nothing to do with the drivers. http://www.nvidia.com/object/geforce...wr_supply.html
I would recommend this: Corsair HX1000W 1000W

I would agree with Bigfella the 9800 GX2 is a power hungry animal
I too would be looking to atleast 850 watts >>>>> the Corsair 1000 watt would be an awesome choice for your rig !

Re: 9800 gx2 174.74 drivers suck..should I try omega?
Guys, i'm a firedog technician....the mininimal recommendation for a PSU with this card is 580watts and thats tested on a system running a core 2 extreme cpu. My system isn't nearly that powerful...
Besides, lack of enough power causes crashes, blue screens, instability and random shut downs....not lag, graphical arifacts and bugs...in no way can a power supply lead to graphical artifacts, it just simply has nothing to do with graphics and glitches. It's only logical..

Re: 9800 gx2 174.74 drivers suck..should I try omega?
No, the current Omega Drivers have many issues with alot of programs. I have 174.74 and have had these issues too, but considering they are beta, got to live with it.
I have a 8800 GT though, but the same issues happen with these drivers and I have adequate power also. OpenGL based games are awful and hardly run. Also, 16-bit games look awful from 8xxx series and upwards for NVIDIA, because they are dropping 16 bit support and under soon...so, it's just how it is(To learn more, google 8800 GT 16-bit support) Sucks, but true. My videos also have many issues with these drivers, some have improper colors and look washed out, this did not happen on my old 6800, but I took the 8800 in, and they said it's working 100%, that's just how the new cards are, it appears. It could be drivers, as NVIDIA's suck, but all these issues just happen to do with the 8xxx series and up, G92 architecture. Heat is always an issue though, make sure to have your Fanspeed at at least 50%, more if Over-clocking, even if you have additional fans. Basically, 167.xx series drivers didn't help, 169.xx series didn't help, and 174.xx series appears to have not helped me either. NVIDIA driver support is getting pretty crappy. |

Also the 580watt PSU must have at least 52apms on the 12V line (or 6pin connector) in order for the card to work, for it to perform it will require more . The 580WAtt PSU will not last long under gaming conditions for a 9800GX2.

Re: 9800 gx2 174.74 drivers suck..should I try omega?
i have a EVGA 9800 Gx2 i have a thermaltake 750 watt power supply a m3a32 mvp deluxe motherboard 2 gig ddr2 800 mhz a 5200 amd x2 processor
my system has the same problem i dont think its a power issue these drivers are giving me 200 fps on bf2142 the 8800 is getting around 300 my card is runnning at 100% fan capability these cards get hot but im idling around 54 c now when it goes to stock standard at 75% it idles at around 69 degrees my system is bottlnecked via cpu BUT there is no way these drivers are going anywhere ive reverted back to older drivers to stop certain crashing the card is fine its not faulty but there is a problem in these cards where not being told sloppy engineering id say now before that my card came with 80.7 drivers on disk witch happened to make my os crap it self within 7 days everything was new i have no faulty hard ware but when i tested a 9800 gt not only did it run smoother there was no clutter. the 1 gig memory is halfed to share between the 2 cards but there is a problem has anyone found the problem i think its most likely crappy drivers Last edited by Preatorian2; 02-19-2009 at 08:33 PM. |

A video card starving for power can act up in alot of ways .......... its speed will be reduced while trying to cope with inadaquate voltages and frame rates will drop as a result ............ if you look at the nvida website you will see they dont suggest anything less than a high quality 850 watt to run the dual engined 9800 Gx2
