I want to install Radeon X1650 Pro card on my Dell computer running XP replacing a lower specification Radeon card. How do I do this?

Re: video card up-grade

Thanks for your reply. It is a Dimension 9100. I read that I should uninstall drivers and software for my existing card before physically removing and installing the new card. What do I do about getting screen display in order to install the new drivers? So you see that effectively I don't know much about computers.

Re: video card up-grade

Download ATI Catalyst 8.3 (latest driver compatible with the X1650Pro) from here. There are 2 options. The first is a full package of display driver and control center, and the second is just the driver.

If you want to install the full package, you need to have Microsoft .NET Framework already installed. Download from here. Install and reboot. Then install Catalyst, following the instructions below.

If you just want the driver, use the Option 2 download link then follow these instructions.....

Go to Start > Control Panel > System > Hardware tab > Device Manager. Click the [+] next to Display Adapters, right click the graphics card entry and select Uninstall.

Close down all windows and programs and turn off the computer. Remove the old graphics card and install the new one into the same slot. Reboot and keep tapping F8 while the computer is starting until you see the Advanced Options menu. Select VGA mode. When Windows has finished loading, the display will look strange. This is only temporary while using the standard VGA driver. Disable your antivirus and install the new driver. Reboot to complete.

VGA mode will allow you to install the new driver using the standard VGA driver that Windows uses when there is no other driver available.

Have you checked your PSU to see if it can handle the new card? Is it AGP or PCIE?

Re: video card up-grade

Thanks. I will try this as the power supply looks ok. Mine is 375w and the new card requires 350w or more. It also says that the dissipation rate should be 75w or more. I don't know what this means. I would be grateful to know whether you see any problems with this amount of power available.

Re: video card up-grade

Check the label on the side of your PSU and post back with the make/model and the amps listed for +12V. If it's a PCIE card it will need at least 26A.

When it says the card requires 350W, don't pay too much attention to this figure as it doesn't take into account the power requirements of the rest of your components.

To get a better idea, enter your full system specs into this power calculator and set Capacitor Aging to 25%. Click the Calculate button, then add 30% to the total to allow for PSU inefficiency.
